Paint Colors: A Spectrum of Vibrant Hues & Inviting Warm Neutrals

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of discussing paint colors, and I’m always captivated by the choices leading paint companies make for their “Color of the Year.” While some years see a consensus in trending shades, 2023 presents a delightful divergence, broadly falling into two distinct yet equally captivating categories: bold, vibrant colors and serene, warm neutrals. This duality offers homeowners immense flexibility, allowing them to either make a striking statement or create a comforting retreat.

Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush: A Pop of Vivacious Color

Benjamin Moore’s audacious selection for 2023 is Raspberry Blush (2008-30). Described as “a vivacious shade of coral tinged with pink,” it’s a color that exudes confidence and joy. This isn’t just a paint color; it’s an experience, bringing an electric pop to any room it graces. Imagine it in a sun-drenched breakfast nook, a bold entryway, or as a feature wall in a creative studio. While it doesn’t align with my home’s aesthetic, I can easily envision Raspberry Blush transforming a historic home, pairing exquisitely with rich, dark wood finishes and luxurious fabric tones for a truly sophisticated and energetic ambiance.

Sherwin-Williams’ Redend Point: Earthy Comfort

In stark contrast, Sherwin-Williams’ Color of the Year, Redend Point (SW9081), offers a grounding, restorative feel. They describe it as “a soft neutral that is highly flexible and imparts a cozy warmth and natural earthiness to any space in your home.” Initially, I wasn’t entirely convinced by this hue, finding it somewhat understated. However, its true charm lies in its versatility and ability to create a deeply comforting atmosphere. It’s the kind of color that invites you to unwind and relax, perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, or any space where tranquility is paramount.

My perspective shifted dramatically after seeing how my friend KariAnne masterfully incorporated it into her recent bedroom makeover. She used Redend Point to paint subtle, inviting stripes on an accent wall, and the result was absolutely breathtaking! It perfectly illustrated how a “soft neutral” can still make a powerful, yet understated, design statement. You can see her clever design (including an ingenious curtain trick!) on Thistlewood Farms here.

Behr’s Blank Canvas: The Ultimate Versatile White

For those who prefer a foundational, crisp aesthetic, Behr’s Color of the Year, Blank Canvas (DC-003), is an ideal choice. This soft white hue, characterized by its subtle warm undertone, is designed to “let you redefine and renew your space.” It’s more than just a white; it’s a sophisticated backdrop that can instantly brighten any room, making it feel more spacious and inviting. Blank Canvas serves as the perfect neutral base, allowing furniture, artwork, and natural light to take center stage. It’s incredibly adaptable, whether your style leans modern minimalist, farmhouse chic, or classic traditional.

PPG and Glidden’s Vining Ivy: Deep Jewel-Toned Elegance

Finally, PPG and Glidden jointly declared Vining Ivy as their color of the year. This deeply saturated, jewel-toned green with cool turquoise undertones offers a touch of sophisticated drama. It evokes a sense of nature and luxury, perfect for creating an accent wall in a bedroom, a cozy reading nook, or even a bold kitchen island. Vining Ivy beautifully complements natural materials like wood and stone, while also pairing wonderfully with metallic accents for a truly opulent feel. It’s a color that speaks of depth and tranquility, bringing the serenity of lush landscapes indoors.

Each of these colors offers a unique personality, reflecting the diverse preferences in home decor today. Do you have a favorite among this year’s top paint color contenders?

The Elegant Return of Pleats in Home Decor

Just as pleated skirts have made a chic comeback on the fashion runways, we’re seeing a delightful resurgence of pleated home decor in 2023. This trend brings a touch of tailored elegance and vintage charm to modern interiors. Pleats introduce a subtle texture and structured softness that can elevate various elements within a room. I’m wholeheartedly embracing some of the pleated furniture and decor pieces I’ve encountered, particularly the sophisticated pleated skirt design on {this beautiful sofa}. This detail adds a sense of refinement and classic comfort, transforming a simple sofa into a stately focal point.

However, like any trend, there are nuances. While I appreciate the refined aesthetic of pleated furniture, I find myself somewhat hesitant about other pleated home decor items, such as certain pleated lamp shades. For instance, consider the one featured on {this lamp}. My immediate thought is, “dust catcher!” The intricate folds, while visually interesting, seem to invite dust accumulation, potentially making them less practical for everyday living. Yet, for those committed to a specific vintage or hyper-feminine aesthetic, they can be quite charming. What are your thoughts on this particular application of the pleated trend?

Beyond sofas and lampshades, pleats can be incorporated through other textiles like throw pillows, curtains, or even decorative boxes, adding a subtle touch of texture and tailored detail. This trend allows for a playful exploration of classic design elements in contemporary settings, proving that good design often circles back with a fresh perspective.

Embracing Organic Texture: Plaster Finishes & Grand Oversized Lighting

In 2023, lighting is taking on a more sculptural and artistic form, with two distinct trends emerging: the embracing of plaster or textured finishes, and the increasing popularity of oversized fixtures. I’ve been captivated by the growing number of light fixtures boasting a beautiful plaster or organically textured finish, and I predict this will be a significant lighting trend this year. These finishes lend a soft, artisanal quality to lighting, making fixtures feel more like pieces of art rather than mere functional objects. The matte, often slightly imperfect surface of plaster diffuses light beautifully, creating a warm and inviting glow that brass or silver cannot replicate.

We recently installed {this vertical chandelier} – which I fortunately acquired at a fraction of its current retail price – in our “circus room,” and I absolutely adore it! Had this fixture come with a typical brass or silver finish, its sleek lines would have felt too modern and out of place in our home’s more traditional aesthetic. However, with its exquisite plaster finish, it integrates perfectly, bridging the gap between contemporary design and classic charm. This demonstrates the power of texture in transforming a piece to fit a specific style narrative.

Parallel to the textured finish trend is the movement towards more oversized light fixtures. This is a design choice I’m entirely on board with, as it allows lighting to become a true statement piece. For the master bathroom remodel in our previous home, I opted for {this striking oversized rattan light fixture}, positioned prominently above our bathtub. It instantly became one of my favorite design decisions for that space, transforming the bathroom from functional to fabulous. Interestingly, this choice proved to be quite polarizing among my readers – some absolutely loved its bold presence, while others found it too dominant. This highlights how impactful and opinion-dividing a well-chosen oversized fixture can be!

Beyond aesthetics, 2023 will also see the continued rise of smart home lighting systems, such as my Caséta by Lutron system. These systems offer unparalleled convenience, energy efficiency, and the ability to create customized ambiances with the touch of a button or a voice command. From setting mood lighting for entertaining to automating schedules for security, smart lighting seamlessly blends technology with style, making our homes not just beautiful, but also more intuitive and comfortable.

Fluid Forms: The Graceful Embrace of Curves & Arches

The allure of curved forms, a trend I enthusiastically predicted for 2022, continues its captivating journey into 2023, expanding its influence beyond just furniture to encompass architectural details. This year, expect to see an elegant proliferation of arched doorways, curved walls, and other soft, flowing lines that bring a sense of softness, movement, and historical grandeur into contemporary spaces. These organic shapes contrast beautifully with the sharp angles often found in modern architecture, creating a harmonious and inviting environment.

The psychological impact of curves is profound; they evoke feelings of comfort, safety, and fluidity. Instead of abrupt transitions, curved elements guide the eye gently through a space, enhancing flow and visual interest. I am particularly enamored with the subtle yet impactful curved shape and intricate molding design showcased in this magnificent entryway. It transforms a functional passageway into a sculptural statement, immediately setting a tone of refined elegance for the entire home.

Incorporating curves doesn’t necessarily require major structural changes. Smaller elements like round mirrors, arched shelving units, or even a thoughtfully placed curved console table can introduce this trend subtly. The continued emphasis on fluid forms celebrates comfort and sophistication, moving away from rigid lines towards a more embracing and organic design language.

Opulent & Expressive: The Rise of Statement Marble

Prepare to witness marble in its most dramatic and artistic forms in 2023. This year, the trend shifts from subtle elegance to bold expression, with statement-making marble taking center stage in kitchens, bathrooms, and even gracing fireplaces. We’re moving beyond delicate veins to embrace marble with more pronounced movement, intricate patterns, and captivating veining that tells a story. This desire for unique character is transforming how we view and utilize this timeless material.

A prime example of this trend is the breathtaking countertop-to-ceiling marble backsplash seen in this stunning kitchen. The expansive slab with its dynamic patterns creates an undeniable focal point, elevating the entire space into a luxurious sanctuary. It’s a testament to marble’s ability to imbue a room with unparalleled grandeur and sophistication, showcasing the material as a work of art in itself.

Furthermore, statement marble is exploring a more adventurous color palette. No longer confined to classic whites and grays, designers and homeowners are gravitating towards marble in more dramatic and unique hues. A captivating illustration of this is {this Calacatta Rosa Extra Marble slab}, featuring exquisite rose pink and terracotta veining. This vibrant variation adds a warm, artistic flair, proving that marble can be both timeless and strikingly contemporary. It allows for personalized design choices that inject character and warmth into any setting, turning functional surfaces into exquisite focal points that reflect individual taste.

My final three exciting 2023 trends are derived from Pinterest’s insightful Trends Forecast, a predictions report based on aggregated user search data – offering a fascinating glimpse into what people are genuinely seeking. And I must admit, the first of these three is my absolute favorite: dog pawties!

Unleashing Joy: The Whimsical Trend of Dog Pawties

Pinterest predicts a delightful and heartwarming trend for 2023: the surge in “dog pawties” (get it? pawties, as in parties!). This is a trend I couldn’t possibly love more! It speaks to the increasingly cherished role our canine companions play in our lives, moving beyond mere pets to beloved family members worthy of grand celebrations. The top trending search terms fueling this adorable phenomenon include “pool pawties,” “dog birthday party ideas & decorations,” and “dog party favors.”

Initially, I searched these terms myself, thinking I might find a sparse collection of niche items. To my utter amazement, the sheer abundance of everything one could possibly need to throw a truly spectacular dog pawty is incredible! From themed decorations and gourmet dog treats to custom outfits and elaborate party games, the market is brimming with options to spoil your furry friends. This trend not only highlights our deep affection for dogs but also our desire to bring more joy and playful creativity into our lives. It’s a wonderful excuse for dog owners to gather, celebrate, and create unforgettable memories with their four-legged best friends. Frankly, after seeing all these fantastic options, I’m convinced my own pup, Cricket, absolutely needs one, don’t you agree?!

Zen Retreats: The Rise of Home Spa Bathrooms

Pinterest also highlights a significant trend towards transforming personal bathrooms into luxurious home spa sanctuaries. This movement reflects a growing societal emphasis on self-care, wellness, and creating calming retreats within our own residences. The focus is increasingly shifting towards crafting spa-like showers, often as a preferred alternative to long soaks in a traditional bathtub. Trending search terms such as “home spa bathrooms,” “amazing walk-in showers,” and “doorless shower ideas” underscore this desire for open, opulent, and highly functional showering experiences.

Expect to see showers elevated with higher-end materials like expansive marble slabs and outfitted with luxurious amenities such as heated floors, rain showerheads, body jets, and built-in benches. These features are designed to replicate the indulgent experience of a high-end spa, right in the comfort of your own home. Both marble and heated floors were key elements in our own master bathroom remodel, and I can attest to the profound impact they have on daily comfort and luxury. I genuinely miss these features in our current bathroom, which is definitely in need of a renovation!

Fortunately, you don’t need a complete bathroom overhaul to achieve a luxurious at-home spa experience. 2023 also emphasizes elevating the everyday shower routine with thoughtful extras that can make any day feel like a spa day. Increased searches for items like shower bombs/steamers, aromatic candles, practical bath caddies, and even bidets highlight this focus on sensory enhancement and personal comfort. These small indulgences can transform a mundane routine into a mindful ritual, creating moments of calm and pampering whenever you need them most.

Whimsical Wonders: The Unexpected Charm of Mushroom Decor

This particular trend was a complete surprise to me – one I genuinely did not see coming! Pinterest, however, confidently predicts that mushroom decor is officially “in” for 2023. And judging by the sheer, staggering number of home decor items I uncovered in my own search, I wholeheartedly agree with their assessment! This whimsical trend brings a touch of nature, fantasy, and playful eccentricity into our homes, moving beyond traditional botanical themes to embrace the unique shapes and earthy tones of fungi.

From sculptural lamps and artistic wall prints to charming throw pillows and garden figurines, mushrooms are popping up everywhere. This trend resonates with a desire for connection to nature, a touch of “cottagecore” aesthetics, and a hint of the fantastical. It’s a delightful way to inject personality and an element of surprise into your decor, whether you opt for subtle accents or bold statement pieces. The mushroom trend also aligns perfectly with broader movements identified by Pinterest, such as “weirdcore bedroom” aesthetics, “fantasy art,” and “funky house decor,” signaling a collective leaning towards the unconventional and creatively expressive in our living spaces.

Beyond the whimsical world of mushrooms, Pinterest’s forecast reveals a fascinating shift in preferences, particularly among Gen Z and Boomers, who are increasingly drawn to “everything weird and creative.” This translates into a surge of searches for distinct styles like “weirdcore bedroom,” “fantasy art,” and “funky house decor,” reflecting a desire for unique, personalized, and expressive living environments. Other notable home-related trends predicted by Pinterest for 2023 include rainscapes (innovative, drought-tolerant landscaping designs focused on sustainability), hipstoric homes (a charming blend of “historic” and “hipster,” emphasizing creative ways to honor and integrate old, cherished items into new contexts), and significant focus on entryway & porch makeovers (recognizing the importance of first impressions and welcoming curb appeal).

And with that, we conclude our exploration of the top home decor trends for 2023! What are your initial impressions? Are you excited to experiment with any of these fresh trends, or do you prefer to stick with timeless classics? I’d love to hear your thoughts and predictions in the comments below!
