Revolutionize Your Kitchen: The Ultimate Built-In Microwave Island Shelf Project

The quest for a more organized and aesthetically pleasing kitchen is a journey many homeowners embark on. For us, a significant step in this journey has finally reached its triumphant conclusion: our kitchen island project is officially wrapped! Gone are the days of jostling for space with a bulky microwave while doing dishes. Our microwave has successfully transitioned from a countertop space-hog to its dedicated, custom-built sanctuary on the end of our island, marking a monumental win for kitchen efficiency and style.

Reclaiming Countertop Space: The Microwave Dilemma

Before diving into the “how,” let’s revisit the “why.” Our kitchen, like many others, suffered from the common dilemma of appliance placement. The microwave, an indispensable tool in any modern kitchen, occupied a significant chunk of prime countertop real estate right next to the sink. This wasn’t just an eyesore; it was a constant source of minor inconvenience, limiting prep space and making dishwashing a cramped affair. We knew there had to be a better way to integrate this essential appliance seamlessly into our kitchen design without sacrificing precious workspace.

Our island, though central to the kitchen, had an intriguing and somewhat underutilized feature: an awkward overhang. In its previous life, under the ownership of the house’s former residents, this space harbored a single stool. We initially followed suit, placing a stool there for the first few months after moving in. However, practicality soon trumped tradition. The area proved to be quite a tight squeeze, rendering it an unpopular spot for anyone in our family to comfortably sit. It became clear that this specific section of the island was ripe for a transformation, crying out for a purpose that would genuinely enhance our kitchen’s functionality.

Transforming the Island: From Awkward Overhang to Functional Built-In

It was during this period of evaluating underutilized spaces that a brilliant idea sparked: why not transform that awkward island overhang into a custom built-in shelf specifically designed for the microwave? This concept promised a dual benefit – not only would it liberate our countertops from appliance clutter, but it would also maximize the utility of an otherwise neglected area of our kitchen island. The vision was clear: a sleek, integrated solution that would improve both the aesthetics and workflow of our culinary hub.

Embarking on a kitchen renovation, even a focused project like this, often involves a combination of personal vision and professional execution. For this particular undertaking, I entrusted my design concept to an exceptional contractor who specializes in bringing creative visions to life. The first crucial step involved the construction of a robust, simple framed box. This box, meticulously crafted to precise dimensions, would serve as the foundational structure for our new microwave shelf, seamlessly integrating into the existing island architecture. The goal was to create a sturdy, level platform that could safely support the microwave while appearing as if it were an original, intentional part of the island’s design from day one. Seamless Integration: Finishing Touches and Appliance Selection

Once the basic framework was in place, the project moved into the finishing stages, where careful attention to detail truly made all the difference. To ensure a cohesive and polished aesthetic, we extended the beadboard paneling around the newly modified section of the island, matching the existing style. This immediate visual continuity was paramount. Following that, new baseboards were installed along the entire perimeter of the island, unifying the updated section with the older parts and creating a truly finished, custom look that belied its recent transformation.

My role then shifted to the meticulous tasks of caulking and painting. These steps, though seemingly minor, are crucial for achieving a professional, built-in finish. Caulking fills any gaps and seams, creating smooth transitions, while a fresh coat of paint ties everything together, making the “new” island appear flawless and revitalized. Choosing the right paint color to match our existing kitchen palette was key to achieving this integrated appearance.

With the structural and aesthetic work complete, it was time to address the star of the show: the microwave. This project necessitated purchasing a new, smaller microwave. The critical factor was finding a model that not only fit the width of our newly created shelf but also offered reliable performance. After careful consideration and research, we settled on this small but mighty microwave. Despite its compact size, it has exceeded our expectations in terms of power and efficiency, proving to be a perfect fit for our built-in solution. The bottom shelf, strategically placed beneath the microwave, now serves as a delightful spot for a few cherished cookbooks and a practical basket of dishtowels, adding both charm and utility.

Beyond the Microwave: Maximizing Island Functionality and Style

While the microwave shelf was the primary focus, we also considered other ways to enhance the island’s overall functionality and visual appeal. Initially, I contemplated installing a faux cabinet door on the front of the island to conceal the shelving. However, after careful deliberation, I decided against it, fearing it might look somewhat out of place or even “goofy” given the open nature of the shelving on the side. Instead, a more elegant and practical solution emerged: integrating a 12-inch bar into the space.

This bar, while perfect for holding a dishtowel, isn’t a typical towel bar. Standard towel bars often protrude too far from the surface, potentially creating a snag hazard or disrupting the clean lines of the island. To achieve the desired minimalist aesthetic and flush profile, I opted for a 12-inch cabinet or appliance pull. Finding an inexpensive yet high-quality long pull proved to be a bit of a challenge, as these items can often fetch prices upwards of $100. However, persistence paid off, and I successfully located this large Venetian bronze appliance pull. It not only boasted excellent reviews but also came with a very reasonable price tag, making it an ideal choice that beautifully blends form and function.

The Ripple Effect: Our Kitchen’s Ongoing Transformation

With one significant kitchen project successfully completed, our vision for a completely revitalized kitchen continues to unfold. This built-in microwave shelf isn’t just an isolated upgrade; it’s a foundational step in a larger plan. We currently have two more exciting kitchen-related projects on the horizon. Project #2 involves our kitchen bench seat, which is eagerly awaiting its upholstery to become a cozy and inviting dining nook. Project #3 focuses on creating a charming and functional seating area at the far end of our kitchen, nestled by the warmth of the fireplace.

In anticipation of Project #3, I recently conducted a little experiment over the weekend, moving our dining room end chairs into this designated seating area. To my pleasant surprise, they fit remarkably well and immediately looked “at home” in the new space. This trial run offered an exciting glimpse into the potential of this future relaxation spot, hinting at evenings spent unwinding with a book or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee.

While the dining chairs looked surprisingly good in their temporary new home, their primary place is still the dining room, so a decision on their permanent location remains. Regardless, I’ve already fallen in love with the potential of this cozy corner. It has quickly become my preferred spot for a quiet moment with a cup of coffee, and it serendipitously proved to be the ideal backdrop for a beautiful vase filled with colorful fall branches I gathered during a weekend walk. These small moments of joy and unexpected beauty are truly what make a house a home.
