Garage Organization: Conquering Our Cluttered Chaos

Tired of garage clutter? Discover how we transformed our chaotic garage into a perfectly organized space, maximizing every inch with smart storage solutions. Follow our step-by-step guide to achieve your own dream garage!

After months of dedicated effort, our kitchen remodel was finally complete, leaving us with the elegant, functional space we had always envisioned. However, this beautiful transformation inadvertently highlighted another area of our home that had spiraled into disarray: the garage. What was once merely untidy had become a full-blown chaotic storage unit, reminiscent of a scene from a hoarding documentary. The remnants of our renovation—extra tools, molding samples, stacks of packaging materials, various painting supplies, and a pervasive layer of construction dust—had pushed our garage past its breaking point.

Our severely cluttered and disorganized garage before its transformation into an organized storage space with The Container Store's Elfa system.

The situation was dire. Not only was parking a car inside a distant memory, but attempting to locate anything within the towering piles of belongings felt like embarking on a perilous expedition. More often than not, these “hunting expeditions” would consume twenty minutes of our time, with a success rate hovering around a frustrating 30%. Our existing “system,” which consisted of a few mismatched, freestanding shelves, offered no hope of containing the avalanche of items overflowing onto the floor. It became clear that a more robust, integrated solution was necessary. After researching various custom garage organization systems, the Elfa system from The Container Store emerged as the ideal choice—promising not just functionality, but also a polished aesthetic.

In a surprisingly short timeframe, just a few weeks, we witnessed an astonishing metamorphosis. Our embarrassing, disaster-prone garage shed its chaotic skin and emerged as a beacon of order and efficiency:

Our comprehensive garage organization project, showcasing how we eliminated clutter and organized our entire garage using the versatile Elfa system.

Yes, that is indeed our garage—and I can confirm my husband is currently the happiest man on the planet! This transformation extended beyond the main storage wall, encompassing two additional areas specifically designed for our tools and other essentials. While I am eager to unveil every detail of this stunning main space and the other two areas, I first want to walk you through the journey—from our garage’s “hoarder status” to a system so beautiful, it inspires adoration. Here’s a comprehensive guide to achieving your own garage organization masterpiece (This post includes affiliate links. For full disclosure details, please see here):

1. Strategic Planning: Measure Your Space and Take Comprehensive Inventory

The cornerstone of any successful organization project lies in thorough planning. To initiate our garage overhaul, I meticulously measured the available wall space across the three distinct areas I intended to organize. Beyond mere dimensions, I made careful note of any fixed elements that would need to be incorporated into the design, such as electrical outlets, existing wiring, and the garage door tracks. Identifying these constraints early was crucial for a seamless installation. These were the three key zones targeted for transformation:

Initial steps in organizing our garage: accurately measuring wall spaces to prepare for the installation of new Elfa storage systems.

Furthermore, I recorded the precise measurements of all larger or unusually shaped items we needed to store. This included bulkier pieces like our twin toolboxes, the Shop-Vac, sawhorses, and a box fan. This detailed inventory ensured that our final design plan would allocate a dedicated and perfectly sized spot for every item, preventing any last-minute storage dilemmas.

2. Seek Inspiration: Explore The Container Store’s Elfa Garage Solutions

Before diving into design, immersing yourself in existing solutions is invaluable for sparking ideas and understanding the full potential of your space. I thoroughly explored the extensive range of Elfa garage solutions offered by The Container Store. This research phase helped me identify several “must-have” components that would revolutionize our storage. Among these were the incredibly versatile Elfa utility boards, which serve as a customizable canvas for a variety of accessories. I discovered a fantastic array of compatible attachments, including specialized board hooks and clear board boxes. These components have proven indispensable for keeping our most frequently used hardware and tools visible, organized, and effortlessly accessible—a true game-changer for efficiency:

3. Bring Your Vision to Life: Design Your Custom Garage Space

This is where the excitement truly begins: transforming your measurements and inspirations into a concrete design for your new, custom-organized garage. One of the most compelling advantages of the Elfa system is the provision of **free expert design help**. You have the flexibility to consult with an Elfa designer either in person at your local Container Store or remotely via phone or email, whichever best suits your schedule and preference. My process began by furnishing an Elfa designer with comprehensive details: photographs of our current garage, the precise measurements of our available wall space, the dimensions of the larger items we needed to accommodate, an outline of our budget, and a detailed “wish list” of desired features and functionalities. After the designer crafted an initial plan for all three of our designated areas, I scheduled an in-store appointment. This allowed us to review the proposed layout, make any necessary adjustments, and finalize every detail in person, ensuring the design perfectly aligned with our needs.

Our designer, Daniel, also took care of scheduling the delivery of our Elfa components and setting an installation date. While DIY installation is a viable option that can save approximately 20% on costs—a great consideration for those with a tighter budget—I opted for their professional installation services. Given the magnitude of this garage project, I knew my time would be better spent elsewhere, and the convenience of professional installation was well worth it.

4. The Hard Reset: Get the Dirty Work (Literally) Done!

Leaving The Container Store with our finalized design plans filled me with an exhilarating sense of purpose. This was the much-needed motivation to tackle the monumental task of a full garage clean-out. Not only would this make way for the impending installers, but it was also a crucial step in transforming the space. I enlisted my daughters’ help in dismantling our old, rickety shelving and consolidating all the “stuff” into a daunting pile in the center of the garage. Brace yourselves, because this stage was far from picturesque:

Progress photos of our garage clean-out, showing the initial messy stage before organization.

My husband and I then systematically sifted through every item. We ruthlessly discarded anything broken, unusable, or simply past its prime. Old paint cans were meticulously sorted for proper recycling, and two carloads of salvageable items made their way to Goodwill. Our rule of thumb was simple: if we hadn’t used it in the five years we’d lived in this house, it was time to let it go. Naturally, I chose the hottest week of the year for this arduous task (a lesson learned—aim for spring or fall!). While it was undeniably unpleasant, the looming installation deadline proved to be a blessing in disguise, forcing us to complete the cleanup without the procrastination that typically accompanies such projects.

5. Seamless Transition: Delivery and Installation of Your New Elfa System!

Once all the clutter was cleared from the garage walls, their dingy and scuffed appearance became starkly apparent. To create a fresh canvas for our new system, I filled all nail holes and applied a crisp, new coat of paint. This small but significant step truly prepared the space for its grand transformation. The very next day, our Elfa supplies were conveniently delivered to our home. The Container Store provides a scheduled delivery window, ensuring you can be present if you wish to oversee the arrival of your components:

The day after delivery marked our scheduled installation day. A skilled local installer arrived, braving what was, ironically, one of the year’s hottest days (the poor man was drenched by the end!). Despite the challenging conditions, he efficiently installed all three of our custom Elfa systems onto the walls in just a few hours. A remarkable aspect of their installation service is the ability to cut components to size on-site. Upon his arrival, we reviewed the design plan together, discussed a few minor architectural quirks in our garage, and were able to make subtle, real-time adjustments, such as tweaking the height of certain Elfa rails and shelves. This flexibility ensured a perfect, tailor-made fit.

6. The Grand Unveiling: Organize Everything on Your Brand New Elfa System!

The journey from a cleared garage to a fully organized one was a gradual yet incredibly rewarding process. Over several days, my husband and I meticulously relocated every item from the central garage pile onto our new Elfa units. This stage was where our garage organization project truly began to coalesce into its final, impressive form. We decided to move our three bicycles, previously hung in the garage, to the basement for long-term storage, as they are only used a few times a year. This strategic decision allowed us to extend our main Elfa unit all the way to the ceiling, completely maximizing our vertical storage potential:

Our comprehensive garage organization project, detailing how we conquered clutter and organized our garage using the Elfa system.

The top two racks were dedicated to clear weathertight totes, each equipped with lids that securely lock in six places, ensuring their contents remain air- and water-tight. We utilized larger 62-quart totes on the uppermost shelves for bulkier items and smaller 46-quart totes on the shelf directly below. These versatile containers now neatly house everything from painting tarps and various saws to sports equipment, Christmas lights, and garlands. For added clarity—and because labels simply make me happy—I used my label maker to print out labels for the front of each tote, despite their clear visibility. The second shelf was also specifically designed to accommodate our box fan and folding stool, with a slightly shorter top shelf ensuring ample clearance.

Moving down, the next row features Elfa work surfaces instead of traditional shelves. Crafted from epoxy-bonded galvanized steel, these surfaces are engineered to withstand significant wear and tear and can support a substantial amount of weight—a critical feature for our exceptionally heavy red toolboxes:

Below the robust work surfaces, you’ll find my much-adored utility boards, which are truly a testament to ingenious organization:

These Elfa utility boards are exceptional, offering an excellent method for organizing all frequently used tools and hardware in your garage.

For a closer look at the items on my utility board, simply scroll and click or tap the images below:

On the left side of the utility board, I strategically used circle board hooks to neatly hold screwdrivers. Adjacent to these, curved and long board hooks provide perfect perches for levels, a tape measure, and even a surprisingly charming mini brush and dustpan set. This arrangement keeps these frequently accessed tools instantly visible and within arm’s reach:

The smartest method to organize your most-used tools! This setup utilizes Elfa utility boards with various types of board hooks to neatly hold screwdrivers, levels, and other essentials.

In the central section, a collection of clear utility board boxes proved ideal for storing smaller, easily misplaced items such as screws, picture wire, and wall anchors. A key benefit of these boxes is their ease of use; they effortlessly lift on and off the utility board, allowing you to take them directly to your project area or simply remove them for a quick browse of their contents:

An excellent solution for storing small items like screws, picture hangers, and anchors! The clear bins attach securely to Elfa utility boards, achieving optimal garage organization.

On the rightmost board, I’ve implemented several slim utility hooks for items like wire cutters. Additional hooks are used to securely hold our stud finder and twine, while more clear board boxes are perfect for keeping razor blades safely stored and easily accessible. This systematic approach ensures every tool has its designated spot, eliminating clutter and frustration:

Above the utility boards, we installed several accessory hooks and small tool holders, now home to rolls of tape, a hammer, various pliers, and a putty knife. Dropping down one row, we integrated seven mesh drawers of two different sizes. One drawer is specifically allocated for all our work gloves, keeping them clean and protected:

Integrated mesh drawers as part of an Elfa garage organization system—absolutely love this feature!

Another drawer thoughtfully holds our trash bags. This might seem trivial, but in our pre-organized garage, we frequently bought new bags because we couldn’t locate existing ones—now, we’re well-stocked and always know where to find them:

Admiring the diverse storage options provided by these Elfa mesh drawers, integral to an exceptional garage organization system.

One of the shallower drawers serves as a dedicated repository for all manuals related to our lawn equipment, while another is exclusively for my husband’s biking gear—helmet, gloves, and other accessories. This small, personal space makes him incredibly happy! Below the mesh drawers, we’ve installed Elfa shelf baskets, perfectly sized to hold all our bottles and spray cans, preventing them from tipping over and creating messes:

Elfa shelf baskets neatly organize all bottles and spray cans in this newly organized garage.

To further enhance organization within these baskets, I incorporated several clear basket dividers. These ingenious dividers allow me to customize the width of each section, making it effortless to group similar products—such as lawn care items, painting supplies, or car maintenance products—for even greater efficiency:

Elfa clear basket dividers simplify grouping products on the shelves of this garage organizer.

Finally, the lowest section of this main wall provides dedicated shelving space for an extension cord, our shop vac, and two large gas cans, which are essential for powering our generator during those unpredictable winter storms that can leave us without electricity for days. Every item now has a clear, accessible home:

I'm thoroughly impressed by what I'm seeing with this Elfa utility garage shelving system!

Ready to see how we tackled our extensive collection of tools? On the long wall on the opposite side of the garage, we inherited a tool rack from the previous owner. However, it was rigid and non-adjustable, failing to securely hold our tools. This particular side of the garage is “my side,” and I can’t count the near misses I experienced from tools (looking at you, garden weasel!) falling off the rack as I navigated past them after exiting my car. It was both frustrating and a safety hazard:

Our former tool storage system—click through to see its improved state now!

We replaced this inadequate system with a highly functional new Elfa setup featuring two rows of hooks. This brilliant design allows us to store twice as many tools in the exact same footprint, a true space-saving victory!

Gaining numerous garage organization ideas from this post! I love this Elfa system for hanging tools.

What I particularly appreciate about this new system is its complete adjustability. Different types of hooks can be effortlessly attached, removed, and slid into any desired position along the rail, offering unparalleled flexibility. On the bottom row, our sawhorses and folding chairs now hang securely from wide ladder hooks, perfectly utilizing the vertical space:

Definitely a garage must-have! These Elfa wide ladder hooks are ideal for holding folding chairs and sawhorses, in addition to ladders. I love how this garage is organized!

On the top row, our electric trimmers, folding chairs in their bags, and a few other tools are suspended from simple accessory hooks. Shovels, axes, and our stand-up weeder hang from straight handled tool hooks, which are remarkably efficient as they allow for multiple tools to be hung on a single hook, further conserving space. Additionally, our garden hose is neatly coiled and hung from this round cord hook, keeping it tidy and preventing tangles:

Super smart tool hooks, part of the Elfa garage organizing system, efficiently organize hoses, shovels, and various other tools.

Moving on to organization project number three: making optimal use of a small nook at the back of our garage, a space where our old fireplace once stood. This corner looked neglected and cluttered at the conclusion of our kitchen remodel:

Loving the transformation of this garage space!

And now, behold its remarkable transformation:

Smart ideas for storing long-handled tools, golf bags, and a bike as part of a comprehensive garage organization project!

In this nook, we installed a single Elfa rail specifically for all our long-handled tools. This simple yet effective solution allowed us to eliminate the cumbersome freestanding tool holder that previously occupied precious space between our cars—a major victory, as that old rack was a constant annoyance to maneuver around when getting in and out of the vehicles:

We successfully replaced our old freestanding tool rack with a new, organized garage solution.

Most of these tools are now secured with simple individual tool holders. These holders are designed to grasp tools very securely while making them incredibly easy to take on and off, promoting both safety and convenience:

A few other items are hung using standard accessory hooks, while larger tools like rakes are hung from straight handled tool hooks, demonstrating the versatility of the Elfa system:

Elfa hooks specifically for hanging long-handled tools in the garage—an excellent organization system!

Unlike the rest of us who bike infrequently, my husband is an avid cyclist and wanted his bike readily accessible in the garage. As it’s the only item on that specific wall, we opted for a direct wall mount rather than an Elfa rail, installing this Elfa bike rack directly into the studs:

A clever way to hang your bike on the garage wall: an Elfa wall-mounted bike rack.

A valuable insight I gained after installing our Elfa system is that many of their accessories can be wall-mounted independently. While direct wall mounting means sacrificing the flexibility of easily repositioning hooks along an Elfa rail, it offers an excellent and more budget-friendly alternative if a full Elfa system is beyond your current means. The beauty of this approach is that you can always add Elfa rails and integrate these wall-mounted accessories into a larger system down the line, should your needs or budget evolve.

Did you forget we’re counting through the steps? I almost did, but we’re now concluding with the final two crucial stages of our garage transformation journey:

7. Post-Installation Perfection: Adjust and Accessorize as Needed

It’s nearly impossible to predict with absolute precision every single Elfa accessory and the exact quantities you’ll need during the initial design phase. Once your newly organized garage is fully stocked and every item has found its designated home, take a moment to assess. Identify any accessories you need more of for optimal organization, and conversely, any extras you can return. A final trip to The Container Store is typically all that’s required. With your order number or receipt, their team can easily access your project details and assist you with any returns or additional purchases.

My Elfa installer shared a fantastic tidbit: The Container Store retains your Elfa design on file for years. This means clients who move to a new home can actually take their Elfa systems with them! It’s simpler than it sounds, as only the top rail is securely mounted to the wall. The Container Store can then retrieve your previous design and help reconfigure it to fit your new space, leveraging your existing Elfa pieces. This significantly reduces the cost, often to a mere fraction of what an entirely new system would entail.

8. Reaping the Rewards: Enjoy Your Beautifully Organized Space!

Let me tell you, arriving at Step 8 is an incredibly satisfying milestone! In our two decades of homeownership, we have genuinely never experienced the luxury of a truly well-organized garage. My husband and I are still somewhat in awe of the transformation. During the extensive clean-out process, we lost count of how many times we exclaimed, “Oh, that’s where that was!” as we unearthed item after item we had unsuccessfully searched for weeks or even months prior. Now, not only do we know precisely where everything is, allowing us to grab what we need in an instant, but we can also comfortably park both cars inside the garage. Navigating from our cars into the house no longer involves an obstacle course of clutter, and we’ve successfully maximized every single square inch of available space. This, my friends, is what we call #winning!
