Our family room, being the heart of our home where we gather most often, is always the first space to receive its festive makeover. I’m absolutely thrilled to open our doors and share all the details of its holiday transformation with you. For those who have followed along in previous years, you might recall our main Christmas tree traditionally stood nestled between the bookcases, behind our comfortable sectional. However, this year, I decided to shake things up and opted for a fresh perspective, relocating our beloved Christmas tree to the front of the room. This simple change has made a dramatic difference in how we experience our holiday decor.
I am absolutely loving this new placement! Now, instead of having our backs to the tree, we can gaze upon its twinkling lights and festive charm from every angle as we relax and enjoy our time in the family room. Our beautiful prelit tree (this 6.5′ BH Noble Fir artificial tree) truly shines in its prominent new spot. When it came to decorating, I layered two distinct types of ribbon to create depth and texture: a luxurious wide gray velvet ribbon provided a soft, classic base, complemented by several more narrow, sheer ribbons for a touch of delicate sparkle. Rather than attempting to drape one continuous, long roll of ribbon, which can often be cumbersome and lead to a less polished look, I prefer to cut the ribbon into manageable pieces. With each piece, I created 1-3 simple ribbon loops, artfully tucking the ends deep into the tree branches. This technique allows for greater control, ensuring an evenly distributed and voluminous look.
To further enhance the tree’s elegance, I incorporated faux berry and pearl sprigs, along with a scattering of faux flowers, all sourced from Michaels. A clever cost-saving tip I’ve learned over the years is to purchase these botanicals in larger bundles from the faux botanical section and then use wire snips to cut them into individual picks or smaller clusters. This method is significantly more economical than buying pre-cut individual Christmas tree picks or sprays. Beyond the Skirt: The Charm of a Christmas Tree Collar
Though it’s a bit obscured by the growing pile of beautifully wrapped presents beneath its boughs, I chose a sleek silver Christmas tree collar this year instead of a traditional skirt. I find the collar offers a clean, modern aesthetic that I absolutely adore. It’s particularly well-suited for smaller spaces like ours, where spreading out a large, voluminous skirt might feel cramped. Adding both style and functionality, I have two of {these chic white floor poufs} in our living room. They’ve proven to be incredibly versatile and a favorite for our family. Whether we’re gathered around the coffee table for a puzzling session, enjoying a board game, or simply needing an extra spot to rest our feet, these poufs are perfect. In keeping with the serene and inviting atmosphere, I chose to adorn our family room with a collection of textured neutral pillows. Christmas decorations, while beautiful, are typically only displayed for a relatively short period each year. By opting for cozy, versatile pillows in neutral tones, I ensure they can be enjoyed not just through the holiday season, but all winter long, extending their utility and charm. A Unique & Charming Christmas Card Display
This year, I embarked on a fun and creative project for displaying our incoming Christmas cards in the family room, moving away from traditional mantel or doorway displays. I transformed a simple decorative ladder into a beautiful, personalized focal point. The process began by weaving a fresh garland through the rungs of the ladder, instantly introducing that wonderful, natural scent of evergreen. I then intertwined battery-operated fairy lights, adding a magical twinkle to the greenery. The finishing touch involved using various ribbons to elegantly attach our Christmas cards, alongside a few charming mini lanterns, creating a truly unique and heartwarming display.
The ladder itself was a treasure I already had, stored away in our basement from our old house’s bookcase setup. The bare wall in front of our family room bookcase proved to be the ideal canvas for this festive installation, allowing it to stand out beautifully. Since the holiday card season was just beginning when I set this up, I pulled out a few cherished cards saved from previous years to get the display started and add immediate visual interest. The beauty of this display is how easily it grows and evolves throughout the season, transforming into a vibrant tapestry of greetings from friends and family.
Given that our main Christmas tree is artificial, having the fresh garland in the family room is an absolute delight. It brings that quintessential, invigorating scent of fresh greenery that I so strongly associate with the Christmas season, truly completing the sensory experience of our holiday decor. With the soft glow of twinkling lights, the comforting aroma of evergreen, the plushness of our cozy pillows, and the festive sparkle of our decorated tree, our family room has fully embraced a wonderfully cozy holiday vibe. Even our sweet dog, Hope, seems to concur, spending more time than ever curled up in her favorite spot on {our incredibly soft faux fur throw}, adding another layer of warmth and comfort to our festive retreat.
Ascending to Enchantment: Our Upstairs Christmas Tree
Ready for more holiday magic? Let’s head upstairs to discover our second Christmas tree! This year, I decided to place a second festive tree on the upstairs landing, a vibrant hub where my girls often gather. It turned out to be an absolutely brilliant location, adding an unexpected layer of holiday cheer to a high-traffic area. I’ve always found myself somewhat torn between the distinct charms of flocked Christmas trees and their “naked” (unflocked) counterparts. When I stumbled upon this perfect “frosted” tree, which offers a delightful happy medium between the two styles, I was completely smitten and knew it was the ideal choice for this space. It’s {this exquisite 7.5′ Frosted Fraser Fir}, pre-lit with warm incandescent lights, creating a soft, inviting glow that perfectly complements its frosty branches.
For the upstairs tree, I curated a sophisticated palette of silver and gold. I adorned it with two wide silver ribbons, including a silver basketweave ribbon (which is unfortunately no longer available) and a shimmering platinum stretch net ribbon. These were elegantly complemented by narrower gold ribbons in several distinct designs, sourced from {this convenient ribbon 6-pack}. The interplay of silver and gold, combined with the varying textures of the ribbons, creates a luxurious and multidimensional look that truly makes the tree sparkle.
The ornaments chosen for this tree further enhance its serene beauty. I used Balsam Hill’s “midnight frost” ornament collection, which offers a delightful variety of shapes and sizes in frosted white and three beautiful shades of blue, providing a cool, elegant base. To add another layer of visual interest and sparkle, I incorporated a set of {these gorgeous “winter wishes” frosted ornaments}. Complementing these glass baubles, I layered in delicate white berry sprigs and soft faux white poinsettias, both discovered at Michaels. A clever touch I employed was to intersperse mini faux white poinsettias throughout the tree, creating depth, and then to arrange larger ones in a graceful spiral upwards, culminating near the very top of the tree instead of a traditional tree topper. This unique approach adds a sophisticated floral element and a soft, ethereal touch.
Continuing the refined aesthetic established in the family room, I also opted for a tree collar for this upstairs tree, favoring its clean lines over a skirt.
