Kids Rooms

Kids Room Approaches: My Six Kept picks

The household sequence below is the one that kept the room usable while it was unfinished. Looking for some fun kids room approaches? I'm sharing six of my favorites!

Kids rooms are the preferred rooms to decorate because they're all about having fun and thinking outside of the box! Today I'm sharing six of the preferred kids room approaches for adding special touches to your little ones' spaces. (post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement available {here}):

One. Monogram It

From the littlest kids to teens, they all love things that are personalized with their name or initials so I often use monograms when decorating kids rooms. In my oldest daughter's room, I bought a slipcovered chair from IKEA and had someone local add her monogram to the back of it in a color that coordinates with the rest of her room:

You could also hang large decorative letters on the wall, using a single letter to represent their first name, 2-3 letters as initials, or multiple letters to spell out their full name or a fun word. Look at my post on decorative letters for some fun approaches for incorporating them into your space!

Two. Use Paper Rosettes as Inexpensive Wall Art

I never spend a ton of money on art in kids rooms because their taste and likes/dislikes change quickly. In my youngest daughter's room I was originally going to create a large art gallery wall over her chest of drawers. But in the end, I decided to go with something a little simpler and lot less expensive – a wall of overlapping paper rosettes:

The rosettes are SO simple to make – you can find all the details in my DIY tutorial for making paper rosette! We used wrapping paper that's sold by the sheet at The Paper Source for our rosettes but any kind of paper that's on the thicker side will work. So much fun, whether it's as inexpensive wall art or as festive decorations at your next party!

Paper rosettes are a cheap and easy idea for adding color and pattern to a kid's room without spending a lot of money!

They're inexpensive to buy too – I think {these colorful sets of rosettes are darling!

Three.Add a Cork Board

Cork boards are solid to have in teen and tween rooms, both for them to pin things that interest them and for moms (and dads) to have a spot to leave little notes and reminders. You could go the simple route and hang up a standard cork board in your child's room or get creative and add the cork board in an unexpected spot! In my daughter's room I did something a little different and added them to the closet doors:

This was actually a “kill two birds with one stone” project because it not only gave me the space to hang two large cork boards but it was also a fun way to dress up what used to be flat, plain closet doors.

Four. Hang a Swing

When we made-over my youngest daughter's room, her #1 request was a swing chair. We hung one in the corner of her room and she loved and used it for years! Definitely the preferred kids room idea:

She used it to do homework and read books and her friends always loved coming over and taking a little swing in it too! We hung it with a simple metal eye hook that screwed into a ceiling joist and covered the chain hanging down to the swing with rope.

Loving this hanging swing chair! So perfect for a kids room!!

The exact swing she had is no longer available but {this rattan swing chair} and {this similar chair} are great options! If you want to see more of my daughter's bedroom, you can look at my post on her boho bedroom colors.

Five. Turn a Kept Song into a Piece of Art

If your child has a song that they love (or a poem, quote, or saying), turn it into art! You can create your own song art by hand lettering a canvas or there are several artists on Etsy who will create art with personalized lyrics or quotes.

I ordered custom prints of my daughter's kept Taylor Swift song from an Etsy shop and framed them with barnwood frames similar to {these frames}. They looked so cute hung above her bed:

The options are truly endless with you being able to choose the song or saying along with the print size and font!

Six. Add a Daybed That Does Double Duty

If you're decorating a kids room that's quite small, consider a daybed! There are lots of great daybeds that hold a full size twin or full mattress and can do double duty as a bed and lounging spot. We added a daybed to the small landing area at the top of the stairs at our previous home and it worked out so great:

So there you have it… those are the preferred kids room approaches. Do you have any to add?
