2021 home decor trends: A stylish living room showcasing a blend of classic and modern elements, setting the tone for the year's top interior design inspirations.

Trend 1: Harmonious Hues – The Evolving World of Trending Paint Colors

Discussing paint colors is always a delight, and I’m consistently fascinated by the hues major paint companies select for their “Color of the Year.” While previous years often showed a consensus, 2021 brings a wonderfully diverse spectrum of choices, truly offering something for every taste and aesthetic. These selections reflect broader societal desires for comfort, tranquility, and personal sanctuary, especially as our homes continue to serve as multifaceted hubs for work, learning, and relaxation.

Sherwin-Williams unveiled Urbane Bronze as its 2021 Color of the Year, describing it as a “hue whose warmth and comfort breathe down-to-earth tranquility.” This rich, grounding shade of deep bronze with gray undertones is a sophisticated choice that evokes a sense of ancient wisdom and modern minimalism. It’s a stunning color that instantly adds depth and a meditative quality to any space, don’t you agree? While a full room painted in Urbane Bronze might be a bold statement for some, perhaps best reserved for accent walls or smaller, more intimate spaces, it truly shines when paired with lighter, neutral tones, creating a luxurious and welcoming contrast. Imagine it in a cozy reading nook or as a backdrop for cherished artwork – the possibilities are endless for creating a sanctuary within your home.

Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Color of the Year is Aegean Teal, characterized as “intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing.” This captivating blend of blue-green and gray offers a mid-tone richness that feels both fresh and timeless. It’s a color that invites calm and promotes introspection, making it ideal for bedrooms, studies, or living areas where relaxation is paramount. While I find it undeniably beautiful and can easily envision it enhancing many homes, I’m still pondering if it’s the right fit for my own personal aesthetic. What are your thoughts on this serene yet vibrant shade? Benjamin Moore also presented an additional 11 colors in their 2021 Color Palette, which you can explore further {here}. Among these, I’m particularly smitten by the subtle elegance of Gray Cashmere!

PPG Paints took a different approach for 2021, selecting not a single color but a cohesive trio: Transcend, Misty Aqua, and Big Cypress. Transcend is described as a midtone, oatmeal-colored hue, offering a soft, comforting neutral base. Misty Aqua is a watercolor cerulean blue, bringing a refreshing and airy quality. Big Cypress rounds out the trio as a shaded ginger with warm persimmon undertones, adding an earthy, sophisticated warmth. While I often appreciate new color combinations, even if they aren’t for my own home, I’m finding it a bit challenging to fully connect with this particular trio. However, these colors, when used thoughtfully, can create inviting and balanced spaces, especially for those leaning into warmer, natural palettes. They speak to a desire for groundedness and gentle optimism, combining organic tones with a touch of soothing blue.

Similarly, Behr chose not just one, but an extensive Color Trends Palette of 21 hues for 2021, all designed to embody “elevated comfort.” This expansive palette encompasses a wide array of different colors and saturations, providing immense flexibility for homeowners and designers alike. You can explore the full collection {here}. Among my personal favorites are Jean Jacket Blue, a timeless and versatile denim-inspired shade; Nocturne Blue, a deep, sophisticated navy that adds drama and elegance; and Barnwood Gray, a beautifully weathered gray that mimics the natural beauty of aged wood. The latter, Barnwood Gray, is stunningly showcased on the siding of the beautiful home pictured below, demonstrating its ability to create a warm and inviting exterior aesthetic, seamlessly blending with natural surroundings.

Trend 2: Nostalgic Nuances – Embracing Grandmillennial Style in Modern Interiors

In a world where we increasingly seek comfort, reassurance, and a sense of history, design styles from the past are making a significant and charming comeback. Enter Grandmillennial style – a refreshing aesthetic that playfully blends traditional elements with a contemporary sensibility. Far from being strictly “granny chic,” this trend celebrates the enduring appeal of craftsmanship, pattern, and personalized decor. It encompasses a delightful array of features, from classic floral patterns reminiscent of English country homes to intricate embellishments like elegant pleats, delicate ruffles, and sophisticated fringe. Heirloom furniture pieces, often with a story to tell, are also central to this look, bringing character and warmth to modern spaces.

While an “all-out” Grandmillennial approach, combining all these elements in a single room, might feel a bit overwhelming for my personal taste, I am completely on board with selectively integrating aspects of this style to add depth and personality to a space. It’s about curating a look that feels both classic and current, rather than dated. For instance, I absolutely adore how the subtle fringe detailing on {these exquisite sofas} offers a respectful nod to historical design, yet is presented in a way that feels utterly fresh, new, and undeniably stylish. It’s a sophisticated touch that elevates the furniture, making it a focal point without being overtly theatrical. This trend encourages us to appreciate the longevity and beauty of well-made items, perhaps even rescuing beautiful vintage pieces and giving them a new lease on life.

Similarly, I find myself drawn to small, impactful doses of “granny chic” florals. These patterns, once considered dated, are now being reimagined in vibrant colorways and applied in unexpected ways, offering a cheerful and elegant counterpoint to more minimalist aesthetics. A perfect example is the charming pattern of {this beautiful blue floral wallpaper}. Used as an accent wall, perhaps within the panels of decorative molding or to line the back of a bookshelf, it introduces a captivating visual texture and a burst of joyful color without overwhelming the space. This selective application allows the timeless beauty of these patterns to shine, proving that Grandmillennial style isn’t about recreating your grandmother’s house, but rather about celebrating the enduring appeal of heritage design elements with a fresh, contemporary eye.

Trend 3: Smart Solutions for Modern Living – The Rise of Double Duty Decor

The past year has fundamentally reshaped how we interact with our homes, transforming them into multi-functional spaces for work, education, and leisure. Consequently, one of the most practical and persistent home decor trends for 2021 is the emphasis on “double duty decor” – versatile furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes. This trend is a direct response to the increasing need for efficiency and adaptability, especially for families with homeschooling children or parents working remotely, often within limited square footage.

The beauty of double duty decor lies in its ability to maximize space and functionality without compromising on style. A prime example, and one of my favorites, is the clever use of a small, stylish desk, such as {this elegant piece}, in place of a traditional nightstand. This innovative approach allows the piece to seamlessly function as both a bedside table for essentials and a compact workspace for quick tasks or creative projects. Imagine starting your day by checking emails from your bedside “desk” or using it as a quiet spot for journaling before winding down for the night. This kind of thoughtful design not only saves space but also encourages a more fluid and flexible approach to living within your home.

The market is currently brimming with an impressive array of small, yet incredibly stylish, desk options, making it easier than ever to find the perfect piece to suit your needs and aesthetic. Whether you’re seeking a minimalist design for a sleek urban apartment or a more traditional style for a cozy bedroom, there’s truly something for everyone. These versatile pieces prove that functionality doesn’t have to come at the expense of design, allowing you to create efficient and beautiful spaces. Here are a few of my top picks for small desks that master the art of double duty:

Trend 4: Durable Elegance – The Practicality of Performance Fabrics & Washable Rugs

With entire families spending more time at home than ever before, the demand for interiors that are both stylish and supremely functional has soared. Gone are the days of “off-limits” formal living rooms; modern homes require every space to be livable, durable, and ready for anything. This shift has propelled performance fabrics and washable rugs into the forefront of home decor trends, offering practical solutions without sacrificing an ounce of style.

Performance fabrics, such as those from industry leaders like Sunbrella, Perennials, and Crypton, have revolutionized how we think about upholstery. These innovative materials are engineered to be incredibly resistant to stains, fading, and even mildew, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and homes with children and pets. The best part? Today’s performance fabrics are virtually indistinguishable from their non-performance counterparts in terms of look and feel. They come in a vast array of textures, colors, and patterns, ensuring that you can achieve any aesthetic you desire, from plush velvets to crisp linens, all while enjoying unparalleled durability. I personally used {this Sunbrella Canvas fabric} in a beautiful Flax shade to upholster the banquette in our kitchen eat-in area. The peace of mind it provides is invaluable; any spills or stains are effortlessly cleaned with just some mild soap and water. Remarkably, Sunbrella fabrics are so robust that you can even use bleach on them without fear of discoloration, making them truly life-proof.

A key 2021 design trend is the use of performance fabrics like this stain-resistant, easy-to-clean Sunbrella fabric on a kitchen bench, perfect for active family homes.

Alongside performance fabrics, washable rugs are also enjoying a massive surge in popularity. This category has been particularly embraced by pet owners, parents, and anyone seeking a truly low-maintenance flooring solution. Ruggable stands out as one of the leading brands in this innovative space. Their ingenious two-piece system features a cushioned rug pad and a removable, machine-washable rug cover. This design allows you to easily detach the top layer and toss it into your washing machine, making spills, pet accidents, and everyday grime a worry of the past. You can see a detailed explanation of how this system works {here}. When Ruggable first launched, the selection of designs was somewhat limited, but they have since expanded their offerings dramatically, now boasting a vast array of styles, patterns, and colors to complement any decor. One of my personal favorites is {this Moroccan Diamond plush rug}, which perfectly combines luxurious texture with unparalleled practicality.

The innovation and variety available in washable rugs are truly impressive, making them a game-changer for busy households. Beyond the Moroccan Diamond, many other Ruggable designs have caught my eye for their beauty and practicality:

Trend 5: Curated Displays – Why Shelfies Are the New Gallery Walls

Pinterest, a perennial source of design inspiration, diligently tracks trending search terms on its platform to predict the major shifts in consumer interest for the upcoming year. For 2021, one of their standout predictions is that “shelfies are the new gallery walls,” with kitchen shelves, in particular, expected to become the new focal point of the home. This trend isn’t merely about the shelves themselves; rather, it emphasizes the thoughtful curation and artful display of objects stored upon them. It’s a move away from purely decorative gallery walls towards integrated, functional, and aesthetically pleasing displays that tell a story.

Pinterest predicts a rise in the popularity of specific items for these coveted shelfie moments: vibrant colored glassware, artisanal clay dishes, and warm, inviting copper cookware. Colored glassware adds a playful pop of personality and captures light beautifully, making everyday items feel special. Clay dishes, with their organic textures and handcrafted appeal, bring an earthy, authentic touch, celebrating slow living and craftsmanship. Copper cookware not only offers exceptional culinary performance but also introduces a rich, warm metallic gleam that instantly elevates a kitchen’s aesthetic, blurring the lines between functional tools and decorative art. These elements, when combined, create dynamic and personal displays that reflect both practicality and individual style.

It seems I might need to up my game when it comes to the decor on our kitchen floating shelves to truly embrace this “shelfie” movement! Beyond the specific items, the essence of the shelfie trend lies in the thoughtful arrangement of objects to create visual interest and personal narrative. It’s about displaying items that are not only beautiful but also meaningful or frequently used, allowing the decor to feel integrated and authentic to the home’s inhabitants. This approach encourages a more mindful consumerism, focusing on quality pieces that serve a purpose or spark joy, rather than just filling a space.

Beyond “shelfies,” Pinterest’s 2021 predictions also highlight other intriguing home design trends, including a fascinating style described as “Japanese design meets Scandinavian minimalism,” dubbed “Japandi.” This fusion emphasizes clean lines, natural materials, muted color palettes, and a deep appreciation for functionality and craftsmanship, creating serene and harmonious spaces. Additionally, the platform forecasts the rise of home “cloffices” – cleverly converted closets transformed into compact, efficient home offices, showcasing another innovative approach to maximizing space in our increasingly multi-functional homes. These trends underscore a broader movement towards thoughtful, intentional design that adapts to evolving lifestyles.

Trend 6: The Great Outdoors, Elevated – Embracing Sophisticated Outdoor Entertaining

The global landscape of 2020 profoundly impacted how we socialize, making socially distanced outdoor visits the safest and most cherished way to connect in person. This necessity sparked an unprecedented investment in outdoor spaces, with homeowners dedicating more resources than ever to transform their backyards, patios, and decks into true extensions of their living areas. From installing luxurious pools and cozy fire pits to investing in outdoor heaters and stylish new furniture, the focus was firmly on creating comfortable, inviting, and functional exterior environments.

As we anticipate a return to more traditional social gatherings with family and friends (fingers crossed for brighter days ahead!), these beautifully enhanced outdoor spaces are poised to shine. The investments made in 2020 will undoubtedly lead to a significant increase in sophisticated outdoor entertaining in 2021 and beyond. People are ready to put their prettied-up patios and decks to good use, hosting everything from intimate dinners under the stars to lively backyard parties. This trend is about moving beyond basic barbecue setups to create truly elevated outdoor experiences, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

This includes everything from enchanting outdoor string lights and decorative lanterns that create a magical ambiance, to durable and stylish indoor/outdoor rugs that define spaces and add warmth. Furthermore, the selection of outdoor dinnerware and serveware has become more sophisticated, mirroring the elegance typically reserved for indoor dining. This holistic approach transforms outdoor areas into luxurious havens, equipped for every occasion and ready to host memorable moments with loved ones. It’s about creating an inviting atmosphere where comfort meets celebration, making every outdoor gathering feel like a special event.
