This year, I embraced the convenience of a premium pre-lit garland, using this stunning 9-foot majestic holiday garland on my mantel. It’s a superb blend of spruce and juniper greenery, complemented by eucalyptus, delicate green berries, and charming pinecones. The result is an incredibly realistic and voluminous display that exudes holiday elegance.
What truly sets this garland apart is its integrated lighting. Once you’ve chosen your perfect garland, the next critical step is to secure it firmly to your fireplace mantel. A well-secured garland ensures that your festive display remains intact throughout the season, preventing any frustrating slips or falls. I’ve experimented with several methods over the years, each suitable for different mantel types and garland weights.
Utilizing Removable Adhesive Hooks
For lighter garlands, removable adhesive hooks offer a convenient and damage-free solution. Command hooks, for example, are incredibly easy to apply and, more importantly, can be removed without leaving any residue or causing damage to your mantel’s surface. This makes them an excellent choice for temporary holiday decor, especially if you have a finished wood mantel you wish to protect. However, it’s crucial to remember their weight limitations; most standard Command hooks are only rated for up to two pounds, so they are best suited for lightweight garlands or to provide extra support for heavier ones in conjunction with other methods.
When using Command hooks, I typically position them strategically near the front edge of the mantel. This placement allows the base of the garland to rest securely within the hook, providing support without being visible. This year, I placed my hooks approximately eight inches in from each end of the mantel, creating a symmetrical and stable base for the swag effect.
Before applying, always ensure the mantel surface is clean and dry for optimal adhesion. Allow the hooks to set for the recommended time (usually an hour) before hanging your garland to ensure maximum holding power.
Employing Screw-in Cup Hooks for Added Security
If your garland is particularly heavy, or if you plan to hang delicate or breakable ornaments from it and cannot risk a Command hook failing, screw-in cup hooks are an exceptionally reliable option, especially for painted wood mantels. This method provides superior holding power, ensuring your garland stays put throughout the entire holiday season.
Installation is straightforward: you simply pre-drill a small pilot hole at the desired location on your mantel. The pilot hole helps prevent the wood from splitting and makes screwing in the hook much easier. Once the hole is ready, manually screw in the cup hook, ensuring the opening of the hook faces towards the fireplace wall. This orientation keeps the hook discreet and provides a secure cradle for the garland.
The obvious drawback of cup hooks is that they leave a small hole when removed. However, if you have a painted white mantel like mine, this issue is easily remedied. I simply fill the tiny holes with white wood filler. While you could then touch up the spots with paint for complete invisibility, I find that the wood filler alone hides them sufficiently. Furthermore, leaving them slightly visible allows me to easily locate the previous year’s holes, making it effortless to re-install my hooks in the exact same spot the following year, saving time and ensuring consistent placement.
Solutions for Brick or Stone Mantels
Securing a garland to mantels made of brick or stone requires a different approach, as drilling into these materials can be more challenging and potentially damaging. However, several effective methods exist to tackle this.
One possible option is to use specialized brick clips, such as these, which I successfully used outdoors to hang our wall planters. These clips offer remarkable security without requiring any drilling. For them to work effectively, two conditions must be met: the height of your brick must fall within the specific range stated for the hangers, and your brick must protrude slightly from the mortar rather than being flush with it. These clips grip onto the edges of the brick, providing a sturdy anchor point.
Another viable option for brick or stone mantels involves screwing small masonry hooks or screws directly into the mortar joints. It’s important to target the mortar, not the brick or stone itself, as mortar is softer and easier to drill into. This method provides excellent stability but does require the use of a masonry drill bit and some careful drilling. Always use eye protection and proceed cautiously when working with power tools.
Regardless of the hanging method chosen, once your garland is placed, consider using floral wire or zip ties to further secure it to the hooks. This adds an extra layer of stability, preventing any shifting or sagging, especially with heavier garlands or in homes with active pets or children.
Enhancing Your Garland with Festive Accessories
Now comes the truly exciting part: enhancing your garland with carefully chosen accessories! These “little extras” are what truly transform a simple greenery display into a captivating, personalized holiday statement. Thoughtful additions can elevate the entire look, adding sparkle, texture, and a touch of your unique style.

This year, I opted for a classic yet impactful touch by adding large, luxurious bows to each end of my garland. I crafted these bows using this gorgeous wired ribbon, which is essential for creating bows that hold their shape beautifully. Wired ribbon allows you to fluff and position the loops and tails precisely, ensuring a full and elegant appearance. To secure them invisibly, I threaded a long twist tie through the back of each bow’s knot and then firmly attached them to the dense foliage of the garland.

Beyond bows, you can also weave thinner ribbons throughout the garland for an added layer of visual interest.

I enhanced my garland by hanging three carefully selected ornaments from each end using this thin gold ribbon.
