There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a complete room transformation, and today, I’m thrilled to share a full “before” and “after” look at our second bedroom’s recent makeover. This space has undergone a significant evolution, adapting to our family’s changing needs and transitioning into a truly inviting sanctuary. From Functional Family Space to Inviting Guest Retreat: The Evolution of Our Second Bedroom

When we first purchased our home in 2019, this particular bedroom served a very practical purpose. At the time, we were still living in Connecticut, and this house functioned as our second home for regular getaways. During these visits, Jeff and I occupied the primary bedroom, our two daughters shared this second bedroom, and Jeff’s dad, who often came to visit, stayed in the third bedroom. It was a bustling, lively space designed for family convenience and shared memories.

My initial updates to the room were driven by the need to create a bright and functional space for our girls. I began by painting the walls a crisp Simply White, instantly brightening the room and providing a fresh backdrop. The outdated ceiling fan was replaced with this stylish globe light ceiling fan, adding a modern touch while still providing essential airflow. Functionality was further enhanced by swapping out the old wood blinds and awkwardly short drapes for sleek Lutron Serena shades, offering excellent light control and privacy without sacrificing aesthetics. To introduce a pop of personality and a playful element, I added a charming peel and stick wallpaper to the bed wall. Since it was a shared space, I furnished the room with two comfortable twin beds, creating an efficient yet cozy layout for our daughters.

Twin beds in a shared girls' bedroom

Fast forward to today, our lives have changed significantly. We now reside in this house full-time, making it our primary residence. Our daughters have grown and moved out, one currently in college and the other a recent college graduate. Sadly, Jeff’s dad is also no longer with us. These shifts in our family dynamics meant that the room’s previous setup no longer served its purpose efficiently. It became clear that the most practical and comfortable arrangement would be for each of our daughters to have their own designated room to stay in when they visit, with one of these spaces also thoughtfully designed to serve as a versatile guest room. This realization sparked the idea for a complete overhaul: project “update-this-bedroom-and-swap-to-a king-bed.” It was time to elevate the space, ensuring maximum comfort and style for anyone who stays here.

The transformation began with a complete reset, preparing the space for its new identity. I sold the twin beds and the white chest, which had served us well, and carefully removed the peel and stick wallpaper from the accent wall. This meticulous clearing allowed me to start with a truly blank slate, ready to bring a fresh, more sophisticated vision to life for this important guest bedroom makeover.

And here it is! The same room today, showcasing its sophisticated new look, ready to welcome guests and our daughters with open arms and elevated comfort. The transformation is dramatic, blending serene colors with luxurious textures to create an inviting and elegant space.

Let’s dive into all the intricate details of this guest bedroom makeover, highlighting each carefully chosen element that contributes to its serene and elegant ambiance, ensuring a welcoming experience for every visitor.

The Sophisticated Statement: Newly Wallpapered Accent Wall

The peel and stick wallpaper that adorned this bedroom for several years certainly served its purpose, bringing a playful and youthful touch to the girls’ room. However, for the new vision of a refined guest space, I desired something with a more elevated, high-end aesthetic that would stand the test of time. My recent positive experience using a beautiful wallpaper in our Jack and Jill bathroom inspired me to explore the same brand for this project. Ultimately, I selected this exquisite Turini pattern in a soft light beige, a choice that perfectly aligns with the serene and understated color palette I envisioned for this inviting bedroom.

What truly sets this wallpaper apart and elevates its appeal is the impressive width of its rolls. This thoughtful design feature means that the repeat pattern is virtually imperceptible once installed, creating the seamless illusion of a custom mural rather than traditional, repeating wallpaper. This gives the accent wall an artistic and organic feel, almost like a hand-painted finish. While the bright natural light flooding the room tends to wash out some of its subtle beauty in photographs, in person, the undulating curved pattern and the delicate dashed white “scribble” motifs are strikingly clear and add incredible depth and texture to the wall. This accent wall now serves as a soft, artistic focal point, lending an air of sophistication and tranquility to the entire bedroom, perfectly setting the tone for relaxation.

The Ultimate Comfort Zone: A King Bed and Premium Mattress

The transition to a king-sized bed was paramount for creating a truly luxurious and comfortable guest experience, making it the undeniable focal point of this bedroom makeover. This upholstered bed was the very first piece of furniture I selected for the new design, knowing it would be the cornerstone of the room’s comfort and style. My criteria were clear and non-negotiable: it needed to be a long-term investment, thus requiring high quality construction and materials; a versatile neutral color to accommodate various bedding styles and room palettes over the years; and exceptionally durable to withstand frequent use. After careful consideration and extensive research, I chose this beautiful upholstered bed, opting for the tall headboard without nailheads and the elegant Sunbrella performance slub tweed white fabric. This combination perfectly balances timeless style with practical functionality.

Choosing a performance fabric like Sunbrella for a headboard is a game-changer, especially in a guest room or any high-traffic area. These fabrics are renowned for their exceptional durability, making them highly resistant to everyday wear and tear, fading, and pilling. More importantly, they are highly stain-resistant and remarkably easy to clean, ensuring the bed maintains its pristine, luxurious appearance for years to come, no matter how many guests enjoy its comfort. I also particularly appreciate the tall headboard height. With many beds, once you pile on soft, inviting decorative pillows, the headboard often disappears behind them. This taller design ensures the bed retains its commanding presence and elegant silhouette, acting as a true statement piece. To complete the foundation for optimal support and aesthetics, I paired the bed with this perfectly proportioned box spring, which is low enough to sit discreetly below the side panels, maintaining a clean, streamlined, and cohesive look for the entire bed frame.

A new bed truly demands a new mattress to deliver on the promise of ultimate comfort, especially when designing a welcoming guest room. We opted for this Saatva mattress in the popular luxury firm option. Saatva mattresses are consistently recognized for their superior quality, exceptional comfort, and supportive design, having received numerous accolades, including being named Good Morning America’s best overall mattress of 2024. The purchasing experience was seamless and stress-free, with complimentary white-glove delivery right to our door. Perhaps most reassuringly, it comes with a generous one-year in-home trial. This allows you to truly experience the mattress in your own home, ensuring it’s the perfect fit, with only a nominal $99 return fee if it doesn’t meet your expectations. One of our daughters recently visited and gave it a resounding “thumbs up” for its exceptional comfort, confirming it was the perfect choice for a welcoming and restful guest bed.

Artful Layers: Crafting an Inviting Bedding Ensemble

The design inspiration for this entire room makeover truly began with the bedding. My jumping-off point was these stunning 22-inch patterned pillow covers. I instantly fell in love with their unique combination of colors and intricate pattern, which featured two distinct, yet harmonious, shades of blue. This provided a wonderful foundation and a clear direction, initially leading me to believe it would be straightforward to find coordinating shams and a duvet cover. However, the search proved to be a bit more challenging than anticipated, requiring some trial and error to find the absolute perfect match that would blend seamlessly. Ultimately, I discovered and settled on this beautiful linen duvet cover in the “blue frost” color, which harmonizes exquisitely with the patterned pillows, creating a cohesive and serene bedding ensemble.

This particular shade of blue is simply gorgeous – a soft, serene hue that perfectly complements the room’s overall aesthetic and truly brings out the subtle blues and greens in my chosen patterned pillows. The natural texture of the linen fabric also adds a layer of relaxed elegance. To ensure a truly luxurious and inviting look, I filled the duvet cover with this oversized king duvet insert. The oversized option is crucial for achieving that desirable full, fluffy, and high-end appearance that makes a bed look incredibly inviting and comfortable, almost like a cloud. Adding another layer of texture, warmth, and visual depth, I’ve also incorporated this soft linen/cotton blend cloud quilt, layered elegantly underneath the duvet. I’m a long-time admirer and enthusiastic fan of Pottery Barn quilts, and they grace all the beds in our home, known for their exceptional quality, incredible softness, and lasting comfort.

The pillow arrangement is key to creating a layered, plush, and ultimately inviting look that beckons relaxation. I started with this set of three Euro shams, also in the elegant blue frost color, providing a solid, cohesive backdrop that frames the headboard beautifully. In front of these, I positioned my beloved pair of 22-inch patterned pillows, which truly tie the entire color scheme together with their subtle yet impactful design. Finally, to complete the ensemble and add a final touch of sophistication, this 22-inch white & blue textured pillow cover in the “sky” color adds a delightful element of tactile interest and visual depth. The combination of varied textures, patterns, and sizes creates a visually rich and incredibly comfortable sleeping environment for any guest, ensuring they feel pampered and at home.

For all my decorative pillow covers, achieving that perfectly plump, luxurious look is paramount, which is why I exclusively use these high-quality ComfyDown inserts. A little styling secret I always employ, and highly recommend, is to size up my inserts by two inches relative to the pillow cover. For example, for a 22-inch pillow cover, I consistently choose a 24-inch insert. This simple yet effective trick ensures the pillows look fuller, plumper, and more luxurious, giving them that coveted “designer” chop and preventing them from looking deflated or underfilled. It makes a significant difference in the overall presentation and comfort of the bed.

Thoughtful Details: Nightstands, Lamps, & Artistic Accessories

No luxurious bedroom is truly complete without perfectly coordinated and functional nightstands that enhance both the aesthetics and practicality of the space. I meticulously searched for pieces that offered both style and utility, and after an extensive hunt, I eventually chose these elegant nightstands in the sophisticated antique taupe color. I was incredibly excited when they finally arrived after months of being backordered, and I can confidently say they were well worth the wait. Their sophisticated design, complete with functional drawers and a convenient shelf, perfectly complements the new king bed and contributes to the room’s refined atmosphere.

What makes these particular nightstands even more appealing is their striking resemblance in design to these much pricier alternatives, offering exceptional value without compromising on aesthetic appeal or quality. The antique taupe finish provides a warm, muted tone that beautifully grounds the lighter elements of the room, adding a subtle touch of rustic elegance and timeless charm. Here’s a closer look at the intricate texture and finish of the wood, showcasing the craftsmanship that elevates these pieces beyond mere functionality, turning them into true decorative statements in their own right.

To illuminate the bedside, I carefully selected and topped both nightstands with these unique concrete lamps. Their minimalist design, perfect size, and understated, sculptural shape make them ideal bedside companions, providing soft, ambient light for reading or winding down without overwhelming the space. The cool, raw texture of the concrete material adds a modern, industrial-chic contrast to the warmth of the wood nightstands, creating an appealing visual dynamic that enhances the room’s contemporary feel.

Thoughtful accessorizing truly brings a room to life, adding personality and functionality, and the nightstands are no exception to this rule. On the left side of the bed, I created a curated vignette designed to be both beautiful and practical for guests. A charming wicker scalloped frame holds a practical yet stylish WiFi printable, which I cleverly customized to match the room’s soothing color scheme – a small but essential detail for modern guests needing easy access to connectivity. Adjacent to it rests this elegant marble lotus tray, perfect for corralling small items like jewelry or a watch, and beautifully holding a fragrant candle, enhancing the room’s welcoming and luxurious ambiance. A stack of carefully selected design books adds a personal touch and a hint of literary interest, while a shallow bowl filled with these serene aqua glass beads introduces a subtle pop of color and reflective sparkle, mirroring the beautiful blue hues of the bedding and creating a cohesive visual flow.

The other nightstand continues this theme of decorative functionality, offering a balanced and equally appealing arrangement. It features a striking piece of organic faux coral, similar to this beautiful option, bringing a touch of nature and sculptural interest to the bedside, evoking a sense of calm. A chic black and white pinstripe box offers discreet and stylish storage for smaller personal items, maintaining a clutter-free and tidy environment, which is essential for a relaxing guest experience. Completing the arrangement is a small, round basket, similar to this one, providing an additional layer of texture and a convenient spot for remote controls, reading glasses, or other guest essentials. Each item is thoughtfully placed, contributing to both the visual appeal and practical comfort of the guest space, ensuring every visitor feels catered to and comfortable.

Seamless Integration: The Rest of the Room’s Harmonious Elements

While the bed wall and its immediate surroundings received a significant and transformative overhaul, the true beauty and success of this bedroom makeover lie in its seamless integration with existing beloved elements in the room. This thoughtful approach allowed for a completely fresh and updated look while retaining items that already contributed positively to the space’s aesthetic and function, proving that not every element needs to be brand new to achieve a cohesive and impactful design. For instance, I happily kept this favorite ceiling fan, which continues to provide both efficient air circulation and a touch of understated elegance with its charming brass accents and globe light. Its timeless design and quiet operation fit perfectly with the updated decor, offering both comfort and style.

Similarly, the sturdy chest of drawers on the wall directly across from the bed was retained as a foundational piece. This substantial item provides essential storage for clothing and personal belongings, effectively grounding that side of the room. Its classic style and rich finish blended effortlessly with the new scheme, proving the longevity and versatility of well-chosen furniture. To enhance this area and create a stylish vignette, I adorned the dresser with this striking large rattan lamp, whose natural texture and impressive scale create a beautiful visual anchor and provide warm ambient lighting. Above it, this framed art print adds a layer of sophistication and visual interest, completing a perfectly balanced vignette that complements the room’s refreshed aesthetic and ties the entire space together harmoniously.

With this comprehensive bedroom makeover now complete, our home is officially guest-ready, offering a luxurious and welcoming space for our returning daughters and any visitors who come to stay. Every detail, from the mural-like accent wallpaper to the plush, layered bedding, and the thoughtfully accessorized nightstands, has been carefully chosen and executed to create an atmosphere of unparalleled comfort and refined style. This project has been incredibly rewarding, and it’s truly exciting to see this once-shared space transform into such a serene and elegant retreat, embodying both beauty and practical functionality.

But the design journey never truly ends! We’re already setting our sights on the next big transformation within our home: our kitchen. Cabinets and appliances are on the verge of being ordered, so we anticipate our kitchen renovation to be in full swing later this summer, bringing a fresh, modern update to the heart of our home. Beyond that, plans are rapidly taking shape for our exciting 2025 new build project. I’m absolutely thrilled with how the designs are coming together, promising even more inspiring home transformations and design adventures.
