Our New Kitchen Selections: Countertops, Flooring, Lighting, and Beyond!

Five weeks ago, our kitchen was a chaotic symphony of demolition and structural upheaval. We meticulously stripped the space down to its studs, painstakingly jackhammered out old floor tiles and the concrete slab in our eat-in area, and widened a window to invite more natural light. Every pipe was replumbed, every wire rewired, leading to some truly bizarre discoveries – like a fully functional water spigot buried deep within our kitchen floor! To secure the integrity of our home, steel beams were strategically installed to support a ceiling that had seen better days. The entire area was then spray foam insulated, a critical step for energy efficiency. This intensive phase was not without its challenges; two Nor’easters left us without power for days, adding another layer of complexity to an already demanding schedule. But now, after what feels like an eternity of deconstruction, we are finally poised to begin the exhilarating process of putting our dream kitchen back together!

Our kitchen remodel in progress

While the current state might not look like much to an outsider, for us, it signifies monumental progress. Firstly, the incessant dust that permeated every corner of our home daily has finally ceased – a huge victory in itself! Secondly, I’m thrilled to be nearing the reconnection of our washer and dryer, appliances we’ve been without for three challenging weeks. Most importantly, I’m incredibly excited to see months of meticulous planning and vision come to life as we start the reassembly. This is the moment where the design board transitions into tangible beauty, transforming a construction zone into the heart of our home. Are you ready to discover the stunning selections that will soon define this space? (This post includes affiliate links – a full disclosure statement is available {here})

Our kitchen design plans! Cabinets, countertops, lighting, appliances, & more!

Before we dive into the details of our exciting kitchen transformation, I want to extend a huge thank you to the exceptional brands partnering with us on this ambitious renovation. Our journey is made possible with the support of MasterBrand, Monogram, Caesarstone, Blanco, and Serena & Lily. My selection process involved exhaustive research into countless kitchen options, and I deliberately approached these brands after determining they were the absolute best fit for my vision and specific spatial requirements. The fact that they not only understood but also shared my passion for this kitchen remodel and were eager to collaborate is truly an honor. Their commitment to quality and design aligns perfectly with our aspirations for a functional, stylish, and enduring space. With that heartfelt acknowledgement, let’s kick things off with the foundational elements of any magnificent kitchen: cabinets, countertops, and appliances.

Mastering Design: Our Custom Kitchen Cabinets

The cabinetry serves as the backbone of any kitchen, dictating both its aesthetics and functionality. Weeks ago, I delved into the specifics of my kitchen cabinet design plan {here}, but for those who might have missed it, I’ve chosen the exquisite Diamond line from MasterBrand Cabinets. The chosen style is a simple yet elegant Shaker, specifically in the “Montgomery” profile. To create visual depth and a touch of sophisticated contrast, the island cabinetry will feature a deep, inviting “Moonstone” gray, while the perimeter cabinets will be a crisp, timeless white. This carefully curated combination of cabinet style and color palette is designed to achieve a look that is both stylish and clean-lined, ensuring a timeless aesthetic that I will cherish for years to come.

Beyond their stunning exterior, I am equally enthusiastic about the innovative features packed within these custom kitchen cabinets. Every detail has been considered to optimize organization and streamline our daily routines. Imagine a paper towel holder seamlessly recessed above a convenient pull-out trash can, or a built-in vacuum system coupled with a toe-kick drawer in the island for effortless cleaning. An iPad holder that ingeniously swings down from an upper cabinet near the range will keep recipes easily accessible, and a discreet outlet tucked away in a drawer will provide the perfect hidden charging station for devices. These smart storage solutions from MasterBrand Cabinets promise to transform our kitchen into a haven of efficiency and clutter-free living, marrying beautiful design with unparalleled practicality. This thoughtful approach ensures that our kitchen will not only be a showstopper visually but also an incredibly functional space tailored to our family’s needs, making every task a little bit easier and more enjoyable.

The Heart of the Home: Selecting High-Performance Kitchen Appliances

When it came to outfitting our new kitchen, appliances were a paramount consideration, needing to blend professional performance with sophisticated aesthetics. Our choice, Monogram appliances, was a decision I explored in depth in {this previous post}. The ultimate reasoning behind this selection is their unmatched ability to combine breathtaking looks with exceptional functionality. Truly, their range – soon to be mine – makes my heart skip a beat; it’s a stunning centerpiece that promises to elevate our culinary experiences.

Several specific features of our new Monogram appliances have me particularly excited. The built-in griddle and reversible burner grates on the range are a game-changer, offering versatile cooking options from a Sunday pancake breakfast to authentic wok-style stir-fries. The refrigerator’s thoughtful design includes a drop-down tray and a quick-space shelf, providing unparalleled flexibility for storing groceries of all shapes and sizes. And perhaps one of the most anticipated features is the dishwasher’s innovative bottle jets, perfect for thoroughly cleaning water bottles – a task I will be absolutely thrilled to no longer have to tackle by hand! These high-end kitchen appliances are more than just tools; they are integral components of a luxury kitchen, promising to streamline our lives and inspire culinary creativity. With their scheduled delivery just a little over a week away, the anticipation is almost unbearable. I genuinely cannot wait to experience the seamless blend of beauty and practicality that Monogram brings to our home, transforming our kitchen into a truly professional-grade culinary sanctuary.

Elegant Durability: Our Quartz Countertop Journey

For many years, the dream of a future kitchen renovation always featured luxurious marble countertops. Their inherent beauty and classic appeal are undeniable, and I was utterly captivated by their aesthetic. However, after experiencing marble firsthand in the master bathroom renovation of our previous home, I quickly came to a pivotal realization: marble, despite its elegance, wasn’t the ideal choice for me. The reality of daily life with marble involves inevitable marks and etchings over time. While some homeowners embrace this natural patina as part of the material’s charm, I found myself constantly fretting over potential damage, which honestly drove me a bit crazy. I yearned for a surface that would stand up to the rigors of family life without demanding constant vigilance and worry.

This experience prompted a shift in my search, focusing on finding the best marble look-alike countertops in quartz – a material renowned for its superior durability and low maintenance. My goal was to achieve the beloved aesthetic of marble without compromising on practicality. After extensive research and careful consideration, I narrowed down my choices to five top contenders, ultimately selecting Caesarstone’s Statuario Maximus. This particular quartz perfectly captured the luxurious veining and classic look of natural marble, but with the added benefits of being scratch and stain resistant, making it an ideal, worry-free solution for our busy kitchen.

Love these Caesarstone countertops that have the durability of quartz but look like marble!

What truly solidified my decision for Statuario Maximus was its exquisite blend of light and dark gray veining, which beautifully complements the “Moonstone” gray of our kitchen island cabinetry. This subtle interplay of tones creates a cohesive and sophisticated look throughout the space. When viewed side by side with true marble, I am genuinely just as enamored with Caesarstone’s offering. It’s a complete win-win: all the timeless elegance and visual appeal of marble, combined with the unparalleled durability and ease of care that only quartz can provide. These durable kitchen surfaces will not only withstand the test of time but also serve as a stunning focal point in our new culinary haven, allowing us to truly live in and enjoy our kitchen without the constant concern for upkeep.

Foundation of Style: Our Kitchen Flooring Selection

The quest for the perfect kitchen flooring proved to be quite a journey, as I explored a wide array of options including various types of tile, traditional hardwoods, and engineered hardwood flooring. A significant challenge was the need to integrate our new kitchen floors with existing hardwood flooring in the adjacent dining room and home office hallway. These existing floors had developed a warm, yellowed patina over time, which I did not want to match precisely, but rather complement harmoniously. The goal was to install something that offered a distinct yet flowing transition, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the interconnected spaces.

After much deliberation and consideration of various hardwood flooring trends, I ultimately chose Hallmark Floor’s Alta Vista flooring in Malibu – an absolute stunner. This engineered hardwood offers a beautiful variation in wood tone from piece to piece, lending it a rich, natural character. Crucially, the “Malibu” shade picks up just enough of the warm tones present in our abutting flooring, creating a seamless visual flow despite being a completely different look. This thoughtful selection ensures that the new kitchen flooring enhances, rather than clashes with, the established design of our home.

My decision was greatly influenced by seeing this exact flooring in one of my friend Sita Montgomery’s recent design projects. Her impeccable taste and the breathtaking results of her work immediately resonated with me, solidifying my confidence in the Alta Vista Malibu. You can explore more inspiring images of Sita’s beautiful design project {here}. Can you see why I’m utterly smitten? The flooring perfectly embodies the balance of modern appeal and classic warmth I sought.

We’ve actually just had our new floors installed, right as I was putting the finishing touches on this post, and I couldn’t resist sharing a little sneak peek with you all. The transformation is already incredible, and the Malibu flooring lays a beautiful foundation for the rest of our kitchen design elements.

Illuminating Design: Our Kitchen Lighting Choices

The relatively low ceilings in our kitchen, standing at approximately 7 ½ feet, significantly influenced my kitchen lighting choices. My primary goal was to select pendant lights for the kitchen island that would feel open and airy, guiding the eye gently around the room without creating any sense of visual clutter or confinement. After extensive searching for the perfect balance of form and function, I settled on two Darlana pendants, specifically the small size, rendered in a sophisticated gilded iron finish. These elegant fixtures are available {here} or {here}.

The Darlana lantern in gilded iron - perfect pendants for over your kitchen island!

Admittedly, these designer lighting fixtures aren’t exactly budget-friendly. I found myself in a prolonged internal debate, constantly weighing whether to splurge on my original choice or opt for one of three less expensive, yet remarkably similar, alternative pendants I had discovered. However, upon closer inspection, the first alternative didn’t offer a gold finish, which was crucial for my design scheme. The second option proved to be too large for our space, and the third featured a curved detail on its candlestick base that simply didn’t align with the crisp, clean aesthetic I was aiming for. Ultimately, the desire for perfection prevailed, and I made the decision to invest in my original choice, confident that the Darlana pendants would deliver the exact look and feel I envisioned for our kitchen island lighting.

While the Darlana pendants will be the sole light fixtures directly within the main kitchen area, our electrician wisely installed wiring for a pendant over our kitchen table in the adjacent eat-in area. For this spot, I chose {this beautiful capiz pendant}, a piece I’ve admired for ages. Its unique texture and soft glow will add an inviting warmth to our dining nook.

Serena & Lily's Capiz Pendant - perfect for over a kitchen table!

I believe it complements our kitchen pendants absolutely beautifully, creating a harmonious and layered lighting scheme. One final but significant upgrade involved our recessed lighting. My electrician replaced our old, rather ginormous recessed lights with sleek, smaller new LED ones. What truly impressed me was his willingness to listen intently to my passionate (and perhaps slightly obsessive) rant about how most LEDs I’ve encountered are either too warm or too cool – a common frustration for many, or is it just me?! He thoughtfully sourced a 3000 Kelvin option, which I lovingly refer to as the “Goldilocks of LEDs.” It’s perfectly balanced, neither too warm nor too cool, providing a natural and inviting glow. This precise LED color temperature solution is a detail I am absolutely thrilled with, ensuring our kitchen is bathed in the ideal ambiance.

Functionality Meets Style: Our Choice for the Kitchen Sink

Our previous kitchen suffered from a significantly undersized stainless steel sink, which made washing larger items like cookie sheets an exercise in frustration. Consequently, a major priority for our new kitchen was to go big – truly big – with the sink. After careful consideration of various styles and materials, I ultimately decided on Blanco’s new Cerana II farmhouse sink, available {here}. This choice represents a significant upgrade in both size and aesthetic.

The Blanco Cerana II is a generous 33-inch model, effectively doubling the capacity of our old sink. This expansive size will effortlessly accommodate oversized pots, baking trays, and all the culinary tools that a busy family requires, making kitchen cleanup a far less daunting task. Beyond its impressive dimensions, the sink boasts exceptional durability, constructed from high-quality ceramic that is renowned for its resilience against chips, scratches, and stains. This means our new farmhouse sink will not only be beautiful but also incredibly robust, standing up to the demands of daily use with grace.

My future farmhouse sink! The perfect large size and super durable!

One of the most innovative features of the Blanco Cerana II is its reversible design. One side presents sleek, square corners, offering a crisp, modern farmhouse aesthetic. The other side features gentler, rounded corners, providing a softer, more traditional look. This thoughtful design flexibility allows us to choose the style that best complements our overall kitchen décor, ensuring a perfect integration. Isn’t it absolutely beautiful? I’m envisioning more than just dishwashing in this magnificent sink; it’s even large enough that I might finally be able to give our beloved dog, Hope, her baths right here, saving my back from bending over the bathtub – a welcome change indeed! For a deeper dive into the specifics of this remarkable fixture, you can explore more details about my future sink on Blanco’s official site {here}. This farmhouse sink style is set to become a truly functional and visually appealing centerpiece of our new kitchen.

Finishing Touches: Faucet and Pot Filler Choices

I could really use your valuable advice on one crucial kitchen element, as I haven’t quite finalized my faucet decision yet. I’ve utterly fallen in love with {this Kohler bridge faucet}. Its design is the perfect fusion of classic elegance and modern sensibility, creating a timeless look that would perfectly complement our kitchen. However, my hesitation stems from the two-handle configuration. All my previous kitchen faucets have featured a single handle, a convenience I’ve grown accustomed to. The thought of switching to a two-knob faucet has me wondering if it might disrupt my workflow or simply drive me a little nuts. For those of you who have experience with a bridge faucet or any other two-handled kitchen faucet, what are your thoughts? Is it an adjustment worth making for the aesthetic? I’d genuinely appreciate your insights into this kitchen faucet styles dilemma.

Loving this Kohler bridge faucet for my kitchen!

What I am not questioning at all, however, is my decision regarding a pot filler. This is a detail I’m absolutely certain about. I’m going with {this Kohler pot filler}, which is honestly one of the cutest and most charming elements in my entire design plan. Its sleek profile and refined finish will add a touch of luxury and convenience right above our range. I’ve never had a pot filler before, and to be entirely candid, I’m probably more drawn to its exquisite appearance than its practical function. While it certainly offers undeniable utility for filling large pots directly on the stovetop, for me, it’s also a beautiful design statement. Just don’t tell my husband – he’s operating on a need-to-know basis when it comes to the justification for that particular purchase. 😉 These Kohler kitchen fixtures will undoubtedly enhance both the functionality and visual appeal of our cooking space, adding those coveted luxury kitchen details.

Inviting Comfort: Our Kitchen Island Seating

One of the features I most cherished in our old kitchen was the comfortable bar seating, and I absolutely cannot wait to reintegrate that dynamic into our new space. The process of selecting the perfect counter stools for our kitchen island was surprisingly straightforward because I’ve been admiring these particular beauties for a very long time. I chose (the Riviera counter stools in Fog, available {here}) from Serena & Lily. Their unique design and material immediately caught my eye, and I knew they would be the ideal complement to our evolving kitchen aesthetic.

These rattan counter stools will introduce a wonderful element of warmth and natural texture to the kitchen, creating a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Furthermore, their elegant “Fog” hue is perfectly poised to tie in both the dark gray of our island cabinetry and the crisp white of the perimeter cabinets, establishing a cohesive and balanced color scheme. The Riviera stools offer that ideal blend of casual elegance and practical comfort, making them perfect for everything from quick breakfasts to casual conversations while cooking. They couldn’t be more perfect for the vision I have for our kitchen island seating, enhancing both style and functionality in the heart of our home. These kitchen design elements will not only provide comfortable seating but also serve as beautiful accents, enriching the overall aesthetic of the space.

Artistry in Detail: Our Backsplash Tile Deliberations

Can you believe that despite all the detailed planning, I still haven’t made a final decision about our kitchen backsplash tile? This particular choice has proven to be the hardest to commit to! My intention is to use a classic white subway tile for the majority of the backsplash, providing a clean, timeless backdrop. I’m leaning towards either a durable white ceramic or a luxurious Thassos marble for that pure, pristine white finish. However, my desire is to incorporate a decorative tile behind the range, creating a distinctive focal point, and the sheer number of gorgeous options has made this decision incredibly challenging. After much contemplation and countless samples, Walker Zanger’s Villa D’Oro Granada has emerged as the clear front-runner for this special area.

A gorgeous choice for kitchen backsplash tile! Walker Zanger's Villa D'Oro Granada

This tile is beyond gorgeous and so perfectly “me”! Its intricate pattern and sophisticated palette offer a beautiful contrast to the simplicity of the subway tile, promising to add a layer of texture and visual interest without overwhelming the space. I’m pretty sure this is “the one” – it’s exactly what I’ve been searching for. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, whenever I find precisely what I’m looking for right away, it almost feels too good to be true, and I feel an odd obligation to continue looking, just to be absolutely certain. It’s a strange design hang-up, I know, but it’s real! But you guys love it too, right?! This decorative tile behind the range will undoubtedly elevate our kitchen’s design, showcasing one of the key kitchen backsplash ideas we’ve been exploring.

The Final Flourishes: Kitchen Accessories and Styling

And finally, to truly complete our dream kitchen, we arrive at the exciting stage of selecting all the fun kitchen accessories. These are the finishing touches that imbue a space with personality and warmth, transforming it from a functional area into a truly inviting home decor accent. This category encompasses everything from the cabinet hardware that will elevate our custom cabinetry, to the artwork and throw pillows destined for our eat-in area, the soft kitchen hand towels, and a myriad of other delightful goodies that will personalize our space.

While I have a clear vision for many elements, I plan to hold off on making a lot of my final choices until the main structural components, such as the cabinets and countertops, are fully installed. This practical approach ensures that I can see how the larger elements interact before committing to smaller details, guaranteeing a cohesive and harmonious overall aesthetic. However, I do have a few accessories already in mind, setting the tone for the style we’re pursuing. These include thoughtful selections for cabinet pulls and knobs, carefully chosen artwork that will complement our color scheme, and comfortable pillows for our seating, all designed to enhance the beauty and functionality of our new kitchen. These home decor accents are what truly make a house a home, and I’m eagerly anticipating the moment when these final touches bring our design board to life.

I’m incredibly excited to keep this kitchen project moving along at a steady pace and, most importantly, to witness my meticulously crafted design board fully come to life. This entire renovation journey has been an absolute joy, and it’s been so much fun having you all to share my excitement with every step of the way. Thank you, as always, for following along and for your unwavering support. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and get ready for even more updates!
