Bathroom Sconce Height Guide: Fixtures I Chose for Our New Home

If you’ve ever sunk hours into choosing bathroom sconces, you’re not alone.

As we build our new home, I’m deciding on all the light fixtures. Because our electrician needs exact locations before the drywall goes up, I’m focusing first on the trickiest fixtures: bathroom sconces.

Chandeliers and pendants can wait — their final selection often happens closer to move-in — but sconces are different. Their placement depends on the exact fixtures you choose, so I need to choose both the sconces and their precise locations before the electrical rough-in.

Below I’ll share the bathroom sconce height guidelines I’m following in our new build, some favorite sconces I discovered during my search, and the specific sconces I’ve selected so far for our bathrooms and above the built-in dining room sideboard. Bathroom Sconce Height Guidelines

Correct sconce placement changes how flattering and functional bathroom lighting feels every day. When mounting sconces beside a mirror, aim to position the center of the light source at about 60 to 66 inches from the floor. This range places the light near eye level for most adults and helps produce even, flattering illumination without strong shadows.

There’s no single perfect measurement for every bathroom; the ideal height depends on ceiling height, mirror size, sconce design, and who will use the space. For example, you might favor a height near 60″ for a child’s bathroom and closer to 66″ if taller adults will use the vanity regularly.

Before finalizing locations, I mock up each bathroom to ensure the fixtures look balanced in context. Here is the lighting plan I created for our youngest daughter’s bathroom:

A practical rule of thumb is to leave approximately 2 to 6 inches between the edge of the mirror and the inner edge of each sconce. Exact spacing will vary with the vanity width and the fixture dimensions, so measure and mock up when possible.

If you position sconces above a mirror instead of beside it, aim for roughly 75 to 80 inches from the floor, or about 2 to 6 inches above the top of the mirror frame. In our previous home’s primary bathroom I hung fixtures at the lower end of that range because clear glass shades read visually light and could sit a bit closer to the mirror without feeling heavy.

I’m very visual, so creating mockups for each space has been one of the most helpful parts of the design process. It gives confidence that scale, style, and proportions will work together once everything is installed.

To make these mockups, I uploaded cabinet drawings from our cabinet maker into an image tool and provided the cabinet color and finish. Then I used a graphic editor to remove backgrounds from the different sconce images and layered them to audition each option in the room.

Building our new home has sent me down more research rabbit holes than I can count. Along the way I discovered many features and products that made me wonder: is this a brilliant idea or an unnecessary extra? Some items went straight into our plans, others left me undecided, and a few felt like pure luxury rather than a necessity.

If you’re building or renovating, here are 15 features that caught my attention—some practical, some divisive, but all worth considering. Decide for yourself which ones are must-haves and which you could happily skip.

1. Hidden Laundry Drying Racks (DryAway)

Hidden pull-out drying racks install inside open cabinetry and slide out when you need to air-dry clothing. They come in multiple sizes and frame counts so you can choose what fits your space. Cabinets are often left open, but you can also add a vented door for a neater look. This solution frees up counter and floor space while keeping air-drying convenient and unobtrusive.

Verdict: Made the cut ✅ We air-dry a lot of clothes, so replacing a bulky folding rack with a dedicated hidden drying space was an easy decision.

Another related idea is a powered laundry chute, which can move dirty clothes from bedrooms and bathrooms straight to the laundry room through hidden tubing.

2. Powered Laundry Chute

A powered laundry chute is an alternative to a traditional gravity chute. Heated tile floors use a mat installed under the tile that warms the floor surface evenly. Verdict: Made the cut ✅ Heated floors were a favorite in our last home and earned a place in this build, even though we’re moving to a warmer climate.

Verdict: Maybe 🤷‍♀️ The peace of mind is attractive, but I’ve read reports of occasional false shutoffs. I want to learn more about real-world reliability before committing.

8. Motion-Sensing LED Toe Kick Lighting

Motion-sensor LED strips recessed into a bathroom vanity toe kick provide soft, low-level illumination that activates when you enter the room. This gentle light is perfect for middle-of-the-night trips without the need to switch on harsh overhead lights. They can be hardwired during construction or achieved with rechargeable or battery-powered motion lights as an easy retrofit.

Verdict: Made the cut ✅ We included motion-sensor toe-kick lighting in the primary bathroom because it’s a small luxury we’ll appreciate every day, especially at night.

9. Staircase Lighting

Recessed stair lights installed along the wall or within stair risers create subtle illumination for each step. This produces a warm ambiance and improves nighttime safety by making stairs easier to navigate without bright overhead lighting.

Verdict: Made the cut ✅ Stair lighting adds atmosphere and safety, and it’s a thoughtful feature for a forever home that we’ll appreciate increasingly over time.

10. In-Drawer Outlets

In-drawer outlets create a hidden charging or power station inside a drawer, keeping cords and devices off countertops. They’re perfect for charging phones and tablets or storing hot styling tools neatly and safely inside a vanity drawer.

Verdict: Made the cut ✅ Having one in our last home convinced me of their value, so we’re adding them in multiple locations this time.

11. Built-in Dog Wash

Built-in dog wash stations are elevated tubs usually located in mudrooms or laundry rooms to make pet bathing easier and cleaner. They’re especially handy for larger dogs or active households that regularly bring mud or sand inside.

Verdict: Skipping this one ❌ It’s a wonderful feature for larger dogs, but for our small dogs, bathing them in a kitchen or laundry sink works fine. If we had unlimited space and budget, I’d consider adding one.

12. Water Bottle Filling Station

A built-in filtered water dispenser in a mudroom or home gym provides chilled, filtered water for refilling bottles quickly. These units can be touchless and convenient for busy households or fitness spaces.

Verdict: Skipping this one ❌ We’ll have a filtered beverage faucet at the kitchen sink, so an extra dispenser felt redundant for our needs. For larger families, however, a separate filling station could be very useful.

13. Pull-Down Closet Rods

Pull-down closet rods allow higher hanging space to be lowered within reach and then returned to its upper position. They make tall closets far more functional by using vertical space that would otherwise be wasted. A typical setup pairs lower drawers or shelving with upper rods that you pull down when needed.

Verdict: Maybe 🤷‍♀️ We’re considering pull-down rods for tall hanging areas, but will finalize the decision once the closet layout is complete.

14. Smart Toilet

Smart toilets bring features like heated seats, bidet functions, and automated flushing, blending technology with modern bathroom design. Choosing a model that looks timeless rather than overly futuristic can make the upgrade feel elegant instead of gimmicky.

Verdict: Made the cut ✅ My partner pushed for a smart toilet based on travel experience, and while it’s a splurge, we decided to include one to test whether it lives up to the hype.

15. Hidden Recessed Medicine Cabinet

A recessed medicine cabinet hidden behind framed artwork offers clever concealed storage. Instead of a mirrored cabinet, a piece of art swings open to reveal shelves for medications, toiletries, and daily essentials. This approach adds a custom touch while keeping clutter out of sight.

Verdict: Hopefully! ✅ This seems like a manageable DIY or custom option that would add personality and practical hidden storage to the bathroom.

Timeless Bathroom Fixtures for Your New Build

Our new house won’t be finished for over a year, so it may seem early to be choosing plumbing fixtures. However, plumbing valves must be installed before drywall, so these decisions need to happen much earlier in the build than many people expect.

When selecting faucets, shower hardware, toilets, and a tub, my priority was to choose timeless bathroom fixtures. We expect this to be our forever home, so I wanted every choice to still feel relevant and attractive twenty years from now.

After months of showroom visits, online research, and plenty of Pinterest inspiration, I’ve finalized almost all of our selections. Below I’m sharing each pick room-by-room to help anyone planning a bathroom remodel or new build — and I welcome input on a few things I’m still undecided about. Good to know: Don’t dismiss a fixture you love because one finish seems expensive. Fixture pricing can vary widely by finish: a design that’s costly in polished nickel might be much more affordable in chrome.

Let’s begin with the upstairs bathroom off my youngest daughter’s bedroom:

Bath #1: Brushed Gold Fixtures

This bathroom will have a 60″ semi-custom vanity and a backsplash with curved details that add visual interest. The plumbing fixtures will be a warm brushed gold, including an arched faucet with cross handles and coordinating cross-handle shower trim. The look balances classic and contemporary elements and maintains clean, timeless lines.

Some may question whether brushed brass is truly timeless. I believe it is, and we’ll reassess down the road — but for now it feels like the right choice for this space.

Next is the upstairs bathroom off my oldest daughter’s bedroom:

Bath #2: Polished Nickel Fixtures

My oldest prefers silver finishes, so we chose polished nickel fixtures for this bathroom, including a coordinating faucet and matching shower components. In person the finish is more beautiful than photos convey, with a subtle ribbed detail around the faucet spout that gives a modern twist to a traditional form.

Pfister will offer coordinating accessories like a towel hook and hand towel holder, but I may opt for simpler pieces since the brand’s options feel a bit heavy for this room.

This bathroom will have a combined tub and shower. After seeing the bathtub in a friend’s new home, I felt confident it would be a great fit. For the vanity I’m considering a prebuilt unit to save costs compared with fully custom cabinetry and countertops; I’m still evaluating a few budget-friendly alternatives.

Now for the primary (master) bathroom:

Primary Bathroom Fixtures

Picking fixtures for our primary bath proved the most difficult. The space requires a freestanding tub filler, and many tub fillers don’t have coordinating faucets and shower components I love. One fixture I’m certain about is the Newport Brass Pardees faucet; its design is a clear favorite.

The Pardees line is a splurge, but if there’s a room to invest in for a forever home, it’s the primary bathroom. It’s available in multiple finishes; I’m leaning toward Satin Bronze, a darker brushed gold. I’ve seen Satin Bronze in person and prefer the finish to online images, but I’m still curious whether it reads as bronze or a warm dark gold in different settings.

We plan to install his-and-hers custom white oak vanities with decorative fluting that will echo the faucet’s lines. For the bathtub, I like the proportions of an acrylic model I found, but I’m still searching for a material that retains heat better while matching the desired style.

One non-negotiable for my husband was bidet functionality due to years of travel and hotel experiences. Many bidet-style toilets have a bulky, futuristic appearance that I didn’t love, until a new smart toilet option appeared that combines the features he wanted with a design I find attractive. It’s an expensive choice, but it satisfied both form and function, and he agreed it could come from his budget.

Guest Bath: Polished Nickel or Brushed Brass?

The guest bath and poolhouse bathroom give me a chance to be a little more playful with color in the vanity, tile, and possibly wall color. I love a fluted vanity available in several finishes, including a soft light sage, which is currently my leading contender. I’ll choose tile before committing to the final vanity color.

I’m drawn to the Kohler Castia collection for this space and am planning to use the matching faucet, shower trim kit, and selected accessories. I haven’t finalized whether to use polished nickel or brushed brass here, though I currently favor polished nickel for its clean, bright look.

Powder Room: Brushed Brass Fixtures

Finally, the powder room will be compact but full of character with a custom vanity, decorative backsplash, and a favorite fixture system. I’m using a components-style line that lets you mix and match spouts and handles for many combinations. My favorite pairings are a deck-mounted spout with chunky lever handles or those same handles paired with a wall-mounted spout for a sleek, modern look.

Family Trip to Portugal: Where We Stayed, Ate and Explored

Portugal wasn’t on our list until ChatGPT suggested it as a nine-day family trip for our group of four, including our two adult daughters. It provided a full itinerary with hotels, restaurants, and activities. After researching and mixing in a few of our own choices, we booked the trip and fell in love with a country we almost didn’t choose.

Portugal delivered on everything we wanted: excellent food, stunning scenery, rich history and culture, and a comfortable balance of adventure and relaxation. Below I share where we stayed, what we did, and our favorite restaurants in both Lisbon and the Algarve. This is detailed, so I’ll start with packing tips and then move through our itinerary.

Packing for Portugal

My top packing tip: comfortable walking shoes are essential. You can wear sandals in the Algarve, but bring sneakers for city walking. I packed a pair that dressed up or down easily and another with a thicker tread for Algarve hikes.

Layering is useful—mornings and evenings can be cool while afternoons warm up, especially in May. Some of my most-worn outfits combined lightweight tops, versatile pants, and a light cardigan or wrap. For outerwear, a trench, denim jacket, and an inexpensive wrap covered most situations. A small crossbody purse was invaluable for exploring Lisbon hands-free.

Style tips: comfortable sneakers, raffia sandals for warmer days, lightweight trousers, and a breathable long-sleeve for evenings. A trench or jean jacket and a wrap are great layering pieces for variable weather.

For resort evenings in the Algarve I favored simple white-on-white looks with crochet trims—comfortable, chic, and easy to dress up for dinner.

A Few Helpful Notes Before Visiting Lisbon

Before diving into our Lisbon highlights, a few practical notes:

Walking: Lisbon is very hilly with cobblestone streets. We averaged over 10,000 steps a day and climbed many steep inclines. It’s excellent for active travelers but less suitable for strollers or anyone with limited mobility.
Transport: Buy the Lisboa Card on day one for free public transportation and discounts at many attractions. Uber is also common and affordable.
Time change: Portugal is on Western European Time (five hours ahead of Eastern). To adjust, push through the first day without a nap and plan for an early dinner to help shift your sleep schedule.

Lisbon: Where We Stayed

We arrived early in the morning and took an Uber to Santiago de Alfama, a boutique hotel housed in a 15th-century palace in the Alfama neighborhood. It has high ceilings, arched openings, and classic Portuguese tile. The hotel sits on a quiet side street but remains within walking distance of many Lisbon attractions.

Our room had a clawfoot tub and opened onto a charming courtyard; other rooms offer views of the Tagus River or panoramic cityscapes. The hotel bar and courtyard are lovely spots to relax.

Breakfast was included and consistently excellent, with pastries and made-to-order dishes—the avocado toast with egg was a family favorite. We based ourselves at Santiago de Alfama for our entire Lisbon stay and made day trips from there.

Lisbon: What We Saw

Lisbon is highly walkable and visually rich—tiled building facades and beautiful details are everywhere. Highlights from our stay included historic landmarks, viewpoints, markets, and lively food spots.

Day 1 in Lisbon

Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) is one of Portugal’s oldest churches and a striking Romanesque landmark worth visiting for its history and architecture.

Praça do Comércio is a vast waterfront square on the Tagus River and a convenient place to pick up the Lisboa Card at the tourist information center. We bought ours on day one; it covers public transport and offers free or discounted entry to many attractions.

Wandering the streets, we popped into small shops selling cork goods, tinned sardines, hand-embroidered linens, filigree jewelry, and traditional tiles—great souvenirs to bring home.

Day 2 in Lisbon

São Jorge Castle sits atop Lisbon’s highest hill and offers expansive views across the city and the Tagus River. The castle grounds are ideal for slow wandering and photo stops, and you might spot peacocks roaming the area.

We then took an Uber to Belém where we explored Jerónimos Monastery and the Church of Santa Maria de Belém—both impressive for their architecture and history. Pastéis de Belém served the original pastel de nata, which we enjoyed at the historic counter.

Day 3 in Lisbon

We began at Feira da Ladra, a lively flea market with vintage jewelry, antique tiles, ceramics, and more. Later, we visited Zara’s flagship store at Rossio Square housed in a restored historic building—shopping there felt special because of the setting.

Lunch at Time Out Market Lisboa offered an impressive range of stalls with high-quality food from many of Lisbon’s best restaurants. We enjoyed seafood and rice at Pinóquio and appreciated that dishes were served on real plates with utensils—plan to visit outside peak meal times for easier seating.

For sunset, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara provides terraced garden views over the city and the castle—an easy, pleasant spot if you’re nearby for dinner or drinks.

Day Trip to Cascais & Sintra

We booked a private day trip through a tour company with a guide/driver to give us flexibility. Although heavy traffic forced us to skip Quinta da Regaleira this time, we enjoyed Cascais—a relaxed coastal town with whitewashed buildings, tiled facades, and pleasant beaches. It’s a great place to stroll, shop, and relax at a sidewalk café.

The highlight was the National Palace of Pena in Sintra, a colorful, fairytale-like palace perched above a forest. Our guide enhanced the experience with history and tips that allowed us to skip some lines—well worth hiring a guide for convenience and context.

On the return, we stopped at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, where cliffs tumble into the Atlantic—a dramatic coastal viewpoint.

Lisbon: Where We Ate

We tried a range of restaurants in Lisbon. Solar dos Presuntos is a classic spot known for seafood and meats, with walls covered in photos of famous guests and a rooftop bar to explore. Pomme Eatery was a casual, TikTok-inspired find that was pleasant for a relaxed meal. One of our most memorable dinners was at Clube de Fado, where live fado performances were woven into a prix-fixe dinner—an atmospheric way to experience Portugal’s musical tradition. We also enjoyed Leonetta, an Italian seafood-focused restaurant with a beautiful dining room and excellent pasta dishes.

Goodbye Lisbon, Hello Algarve

After Lisbon we drove south to the Algarve, a coastal region known for golden cliffs, dramatic rock formations, clear Atlantic waters, and charming seaside towns. The pace is slower and more relaxed—perfect for soaking up scenery and enjoying outdoor dining.

We rented a car at the airport for more flexibility exploring towns and coastlines. The drive to the Algarve is just over two hours and mostly straightforward.

Where We Stayed

Vila Vita Parc served as our home base in the Algarve. The resort sits on cliffs above the ocean with lush grounds, multiple pools, tucked-away seating areas, and a range of dining options from casual to upscale. The property offers quiet adults-only spaces as well as family-friendly areas and activities.

We stayed in a Family Oasis Suite in a villa-style area inspired by Moorish design. The suite had two bedrooms, a large bathroom with double sinks, and a private rooftop terrace overlooking the resort and ocean—an ideal layout for our family.

The Algarve: What We Did

A highlight was a boat tour along the coast that entered sea caves including the iconic Benagil Cave, famous for its circular roof opening where sunlight pours through. The coastline features arches, hidden beaches, and dramatic cliffs—booking a boat tour in advance is recommended, especially during busy months.

We explored Lagos Old Town with its cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, cafés, and boutiques. I brought home handmade dishware I found in the local shops. Ponta da Piedade is another must-see for dramatic rock formations and cliffside views, and it’s the starting point for scenic coastal walks.

When weather limited some outdoor walking, we still enjoyed overlooks and resort activities like golf, mini golf, tennis, and paddle courts—there are options whether you seek relaxation or recreation.

Note: In early May, temperatures were typically in the low 70s with breezy conditions—ideal for sightseeing and outdoor dining but not always warm enough for all-day beach swimming. If beach time is your priority, later summer months are warmer but also busier.

Other Algarve Spots to Consider Visiting

We couldn’t see everything, but these additional Algarve destinations are highly recommended:

Praia da Marinha – renowned for cliffs and turquoise water
Carvoeiro – charming town with cliffside views and restaurants
Albufeira – larger resort town with lively dining and nightlife
Praia do Camilo – a beautiful beach accessed by a long wooden staircase
Sagres – rugged coastal scenery and dramatic ocean views
Ferragudo – a quieter fishing village with a local feel

The Algarve: Where We Ate

We enjoyed several restaurants at Vila Vita Parc, including Adega, which features classic Portuguese cuisine in a wine-cellar atmosphere and served one of our best meals. Aladin Grill impressed with Moroccan-inspired ambiance and fresh, flavorful dishes. We also dined at Quinta dos Santos, a winery-restaurant set among vineyards and olive trees—an excellent choice for wine lovers. Breakfast each morning at Atlântico offered spectacular ocean views and a generous spread.

Putting Portugal on Your Travel List

Portugal exceeded our expectations—between Lisbon’s energy and the Algarve’s breathtaking coastline, the trip combined culture, scenery, and relaxation in a way that felt complete. The food, welcoming people, and overall relaxed atmosphere made it a wonderful family destination. If you haven’t visited yet, consider moving Portugal to the top of your travel list.

If we return, Porto and the Douro Valley are high on our list, along with Nazaré for its surf culture. Portugal is a place you can revisit and still find new experiences each time.

Our future residence is meticulously designed in a sophisticated modern Tudor style, a choice that perfectly encapsulates everything I adore about timeless architectural aesthetics, yet infused with a refreshing, contemporary perspective. This design philosophy ensures the home will possess the rich character and artisanal craftsmanship synonymous with traditional Tudor residences. However, it thoughtfully avoids the often-heavy and dark ambiance of its predecessors by featuring updated proportions, an improved interior flow, and spaces that feel inherently livable, expansive, and generously filled with natural light. This blend creates a home that respects heritage while embracing the needs of modern living.

Throughout the extensive design process, we were fortunate to receive highly realistic renderings of our home. These visual aids were not only incredibly helpful but also instrumental in refining our vision and making informed decisions every step of the way. They truly allowed us to visualize the outcome long before construction began. This is, in fact, our future combination guest and pool house – a versatile addition designed to serve multiple essential functions. Having moved frequently over the years, Jeff and I have cultivated wonderful friendships across the country, leading to frequent visits from out-of-town guests. Therefore, a top priority for our forever home was to create a truly comfortable, private, and welcoming space for these cherished visitors.

Initially, our thoughts leaned towards integrating a spacious and well-appointed guest suite within the main house, likely on an upper floor. However, as our plans evolved and the idea of building a small, dedicated pool house took shape, a brilliant synergy emerged: why not combine the functionalities of a guest suite and a pool house into one cohesive structure? This innovative concept proved to be a game-changer. Instead of our initial plan for a four-bedroom main house, we now have three beautifully appointed bedrooms within the primary residence, with the invaluable fourth bedroom housed within the elegant pool/guest house. This separate dwelling is designed in the identical modern Tudor style as our main home, ensuring a seamless aesthetic flow and a sense of unified elegance across the entire property. It’s not just practical; it adds an undeniable layer of charm and hospitality.

Now, let’s delve into the fascinating details behind the design of our new home, particularly the incredible talent we partnered with! For our custom build, we wholeheartedly chose Tony Frazier of Frazier Home Design. The story of how we connected with Tony is quite serendipitous and truly feels like fate intervened. My initial search involved diligently reviewing the portfolios of several highly recommended local architects, but none seemed to quite capture the unique blend of timelessness and modernity that we envisioned for our home. Their designs, while beautiful, didn’t perfectly align with the specific style we had meticulously curated in our minds.

Feeling a bit discouraged, I turned to our trusted contractor for further suggestions. His recommendation was immediate and enthusiastic: “You absolutely must check out Frazier Home Design.” He mentioned they were based about two hours north of us in Raleigh. The name, oddly, resonated with a faint familiarity. Acting on a hunch, I immediately went to Instagram to look them up. To my delight and surprise, I quickly realized I was already following their account – and, even more astonishingly, they were following me back! For years, I’ve harbored a singular dream: to finally have a laundry room that is, in essence, a proper *room* – not merely a cramped, functional pass-through or a closet tucked away in a hallway. Our new laundry room promises to be everything I’ve ever wished for and more. It boasts an incredibly generous square footage, providing ample space for not just appliances, but also an abundance of storage. You know how much I adore organizing, so this expansive storage capacity is a dream come true, offering endless possibilities for tidiness and efficiency. Crucially, it will also feature a dedicated sink, a luxury I’ve sorely missed in our last two homes, proving invaluable for soaking, handwashing, and messy cleanups. And then, without fail, we would move again, leaving behind our hard-won organizational havens. This time, however, the narrative changes! In our forever home, I will finally have the immense pleasure and satisfaction of designing a truly spacious and functional master closet in a house where we genuinely plan to stay for the long term. This isn’t just about storage; it’s about creating a personal sanctuary.

This master closet will be far more than a simple repository for clothes and shoes. It’s envisioned as a sophisticated dressing room, meticulously designed to offer not only ample space for every garment and accessory but also integrated features that elevate the daily routine. Key among these are a charming window seat, perfect for moments of quiet contemplation or trying on shoes, and a bespoke sit-down vanity. This vanity, while designed on a more intimate scale, draws inspiration from the luxurious and practical setups seen in high-end showcase homes. The window seat will offer a moment of pause, while the sit-down vanity, with its perfect lighting and mirror, will transform makeup application and hair styling into a comfortable, enjoyable experience. Two years ago, we tentatively added a small, delightfully simple raised bed to our current backyard. Simple Swaps, Big Impact

Sometimes, the most impactful changes come from simple swaps with everyday items. On our coffee bar shelves, I replaced the faux avocados that usually reside in the white ruffle serving bowls with these charming large jingle bells tied with this elegant light blue velvet ribbon. The result? An instant dose of holiday magic!

Alternatively, you can use pretty holiday ornaments as bowl fillers for a touch of sparkle and shine. Using what you already have on hand is a fantastic way to create a personalized and budget-friendly holiday display.

I also swapped out my usual plant for a vibrant pink poinsettia, nestled in this beloved vase/planter. The pop of color and festive foliage instantly brightened up the space and added a touch of holiday cheer.

Adding bows crafted from this luxurious 2″ wired velvet ribbon to these sconces above our coffee bar was the perfect finishing touch. The soft velvet and delicate bows added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the overall design.

The Grand Reveal: A Festive Coffee Bar Transformation

The final result is a Christmas coffee bar that feels festive and inviting without being overwhelming. It has undoubtedly made our December mornings feel extra special, and that’s precisely the goal, isn’t it?

And for the ultimate touch of homemade goodness, we’ll be making homemade marshmallows with the girls once they arrive home for the holidays in a few days. They’re incredibly easy to make and are absolutely divine on their own or floating in a cup of rich hot chocolate!

Want a sneak peek at the rest of our holiday decor? This year, I opted for a coastal-inspired Christmas theme, deviating from the traditional red and green palette. Due to a unexpected heat pump malfunction shortly after Thanksgiving, my decorating was slightly scaled back (we stayed close to the fireplace!). However, I’m surprisingly enjoying the more minimalistic and understated vibe.

In our entryway, I placed mercury Christmas trees on our console table and swapped out the usual glass bead garland in the faux clamshell for a collection of shimmering gold ornaments.

In our dining room, I added these charming rattan bells, tied with this delicate dusty blue velvet ribbon, to the back of each chair. A subtle yet elegant touch that perfectly complements the coastal Christmas theme.

I hung our stockings from the pulls on our dining room console (I’m always a bit nervous about hanging them on our frequently used fireplace!). My incredibly talented youngest daughter hand-knitted them for me as a Christmas present a few years ago, and I cherish them deeply!

Our fireplace mantel is adorned with the same garland we’ve used for the past few years. It’s incredibly easy to store with the bows and ornaments already attached, making setup a breeze!

And for our Christmas tree decor, I’ve chosen to repeat last year’s theme! Since we anticipate this being our last Christmas in this home before moving into our new build (groundbreaking is scheduled for January!), I’m hesitant to invest in too many new items, as our new home will have a different aesthetic compared to our current coastal-inspired abode.
